Why is the summer reading program important?

Studies show that elementary aged children who don’t read regularly over the summer vacation lose a portion of their learned skills. This is called the “summer slide.” You can help your kids avoid the summer slide by participating in a summer reading program at the library of your choice.

This year’s theme at the Voorheesville Public Library is “Every Hero Has a Story!” Reader registration opened online on June 1. Voorheesville Elementary School students will be able to create their accounts during library time in school.

With our new reader reward system, all participants who record their reading will receive prizes at the end of the program, and also earn tickets for grand prize drawings. Check the library’s online calendar to see all of the fun events we have scheduled.

Registration is required for some of these activities and will begin on June 1. You can register through the online calendar, by phone or using email. The Voorheesville Public Library is excited to keep our community’s young people reading and learning through the summer, we hope to see you here.
