Teens can drop in anytime between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., for a quiet, air-conditioned space to catch up with your summer work. Snacks will be provided, bring your own water bottle.
Matinee and lecture
On Sunday, September 7 at 1:30 pm, everyone is welcome to attend this special free screening of 12 Years a Slave, and lecture given by historical expert Dr. Clifford Brown, Professor of Political Science at Union College. Based on the 19th Century slave narrative by Solomon Northup, and 2014 Academy Award Winner, 12 Years a Slave captured the hearts and minds of audiences from around the world. After the movie, Dr. Brown will lecture on the life of Solomon Northup, his ties to the local area, and provide details of Northup’s life after he regained his freedom. There will also be a question and answer session. There will be a break between the movie and lecture at which time refreshments will be served.

Leashed dogs are welcome and encouraged to participate in the run. All proceeds from the marathon will be donated to Guilderhaven, Inc., a not-for-profit that helps the animal community. On Monday, Aug. 11 at 2 p.m., students in kindergarten through grade three can join us at the Voorheesville Public Library for fun activities about Scaredy Squirrel, Pete the Cat, Naked Mole Rat, and more of our favorite animal characters.
Light-trick photography
Teens in grades six and up are invited to join us on Tuesday, Aug. 12 at 7 p.m. We will learn how to paint with light, and take a photo of your artwork with your cell phone or our iPad. We’ll gather all of the photos to make a gallery show. Please register.
Owl ecology
At 2 p.m., on Wednesday, Aug. 13 kids in grades four to six are invited to learn about the common owls of our area and how you can find them on a nighttime owl prowl. Be an ornithologist as you participate in a hands-on investigation of owl pellets. Space is limited, please register.

All proceeds from the marathon will be donated to Guilderhaven, Inc., a not-for-profit group that helps the animal community. At noon, the buck-a-bag day opens at the library. Fill your plastic grocery bag with books for only $1. At 12:30 p.m., the fun kicks into high gear with local band Lifeline, a high energy trio of acoustic and electric guitars playing a variety of classic rock and blues with male and female vocals. You won’t want to miss this fun family day and help support Guilderhaven.

We Dig Dinosaurs
Learn what it’s like to dig for dinosaurs. At 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 28, children in kindergarten through grade three will discover how hard it is to rebuild a creature from just the bones. Please register and pick up a free copy of Boy Were We Wrong About Dinosaurs.
39 Clues Party
Fans of the 39 Clues books and aspiring secret agents in grades four through seven are invited to a party on Wednesday, July 30 at 2 p.m. to celebrate the series. We’ll divide into family branches to face the trivia challenge, crack codes, track Cahill clan members, and test your powers of observation with games and activities. Please register.
“Giraffes Can’t Dance” Music & Yoga Program
On Thursday, July 31 at 10:15 a.m, join Lisa Russo, an early childhood music educator from Tykesadelic Music, and Ellen Dragonette, yoga instructor, for a music and creative movement program that is sure to get children up and dancing! Come to the Jungle Hop with Gerald the Giraffe and see what his jungle friends are up to. Explore each animal’s yoga pose, the dance they are doing and its music and use instruments that are just right for each dance. Based on the book by Giles Andreae this active yoga/music & movement class promises to be great fun! For ages three through eight. Please register.

Sculptures
At 2 p.m., children in kindergarten through grade four can create their own healthy snack and have fun too! We’ll read books by Saxton Freymann for inspiration, then use fresh fruits and vegetables to create our own edible sculptures.
Snack Attack with the Honest Weight Food
Co-op
Students in grades five and up will learn how to eat healthy, even when snacking. The Honest Weight Food Co-op teachers will set up stations where you can make smoothies, veggie and cheese kabobs, fruit dip, trail mix and healthy soda. Take home the recipes so you can cook up more when you feel a snack attack coming.
The drawing for the donated HD 7-inch Kindle Tablet was held at the ice cream social on June 26 at the library. The winner was announced by visiting New York State Assemblywoman Patricia A. Fahy. And the winner was Bruce Mance. Thank you all for participating and for attending the social. A special thanks to Stewarts’ Ice Cream Shops for their generous and delicious contribution that makes this community event possible.

On Saturday, July 19, at 10:15 a.m., this very special musical story time returns for toddlers through kindergarteners with an adult, featuring music and movement, stories, rhymes, and fun activities. Although she has officially retired, Mrs. Laiosa has promised to offer the occasional special program at the library.

Dance instructor Beth Jacobs will lead children in kindergarten through grade three on a creative exploration of South American rainforests with a dynamic program that incorporates music, movement, and books. Please register early and join us on July 21 at 2 p.m., for this unique and fun program.

Starting kindergarten is a special time for parents and children. Join us on Tuesday, July 22, at 6:30 p.m., for a fun-filled and educational evening where soon-to-be-kindergarteners will hone their kindergarten skills at activity and learning centers. LEGO Club
On Wednesday, July 23, at 7 p.m., tweens in grades four through seven are invited to join our new LEGO Club. Enjoy some free-building time with other LEGO-maniacs. What kind of robot will you build from our LEGOs? Feel free to bring a model from home to show off. Library LEGOs to share and club-member creations will be kept separate. You can also take a turn on the Wii playing LEGO videogames. Please register.

Beginning as a guitar and harmonica duo, the sound of the Red Haired Strangers has been enriched with the addition of fiddle, drums, bass, dobro, and pedal steel guitar. At 7 p.m., on July 9, stop by the Voorheesville Public Library for a relaxing evening. Bring a blanket, your picnic baskets, and enjoy our concert on the lawn. The Friends will provide drinks, fruit, and cookies to share.

On Monday, July 7, at 2 p.m., children in kindergarten through grade four are invited to come meet some truly unique chickens. Smoke Ridge Farm from Rochester, N.Y. will be paying a special visit to the library, bringing with them chickens from around the world. You won’t want to miss this one-of-a-kind program.
Creativity lab
At 2 p.m., on July 9, tweens grades four through six, are invited to explore chemistry and physics through art. Paint-bomb a banner for the library. Mold a clay creation, then use circuits to light it up, or make it move. Discover patterns made by different sound waves, and make a lava lamp to keep. Please register.
Take flight
At 2 p.m., on July 14, children in kindergarten through grade three will be using feathers, paper, balloons, and bubbles to learn about flight. Educator Anita Sanchez will assist children to create their own science experiment to explore the property of things that fly

Meet local author Rose Kent on July 16, at 6:30 p.m. Join the fun as Kent leads us in a lively discussion of her middle grade novel Rocky Road, a moving story of family, community, and ice cream, which is set in Schenectady. Read It Forward
Free copies of the suspenseful adventure The Paladin Prophecy by Mark Frost have been released in Voorheesville for teens. If you get one, read it, comment on it, and pass it on to another teen. Details are inside the paperbacks. You can also read The Paladin Prophecy on one of the YA Nooks, or in hardcover from the library, or listen to the audiobook. All readers should respond to our quick online survey for a chance to win the second book in the series, Alliance. If you need help passing a copy forward, drop it off at the library.
Come one, come all
Join us for our annual ice cream social on Thursday, June 26, at 6:30 p.m. We will say good-bye to the school year and say hello to summer with make your own sundaes, generously donated by Stewarts. We will have book lists for summer reading suggestions, and you can sign up for the Summer Reading Program. NYS Assemblywoman Patricia A. Fahy will be in attendance, so be sure to stop by, have some delicious Stewart’s ice cream and enjoy a lovely evening.
