Movie matinee

Join everyone’s favorite good guy, Charlie Brown, as he embarks on a heroic quest, while his beagle pal, Snoopy, takes to the skies to pursue his arch nemesis, the Red Baron. This matinee will start at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, April 25. All ages welcome. Light refreshments will be served The movie is rated G and runs 89 minutes.

Steam story time

On Tuesday, April 26 at 10:15 a.m., following a short story time, parents and children will explore and play at different stations using hands on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math, building not only their reading skills but their STEAM skills too. Stations include: Build a playdough flower, carrot painting, seed sorting, sensory table play garden, growing a bean seed, and flower petal counting. For preschool through age 5. Please register.

Crazy craft day

The youth services department has a closet full of leftover craft projects that are looking for someone to make and take. Drop in from 10 a.m. to noon, on April 27, to make crafts from a wide assortment of art activities. For ages 3 to grade three; no registration is necessary

Scratch programming

On Wednesday, April 27, tweens and teens in grades four and up will design their own games in Scratch, a block-based programming language. John Love will provide instruction from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Please register as equipment is limited

Beginning beading

Learn easy beading techniques on Thursday, April 28, at 5:30 p.m. Mothers and grandmothers are encouraged to bring a child or grandchild to bead along with them since it is spring vacation.  For grade six up to adults. Please register and there will be a small materials fee.

Name that animal

Jessica Loy, local author of “Weird & Wild Animal Facts,” will be paying a special visit to the library on Friday, April 29, at 10:30 a.m. Jessica will lead the children in playing a game to see if they can guess which interesting facts go with which animal. The program will conclude with an art project that will give the children an opportunity to create their own weird and wild animals.For grades one to three. Space is limited so please register early.

Planning your vegetable garden

Are you interested in growing some of your own fruits and vegetables this summer? The Voorheesville library is partnering with some local master gardeners to bring you all the information you will need to start and grow your own vegetable garden

Join a roundtable discussion on April 10 at 2 p.m., led by Cornell Cooperative Extension master gardeners and local gardener Sharon Miller. You can explore the library’s seed collection and decide what’s best for your garden.

Planning for Social Security

On April 13 at 6:30 p.m., Nicole Iannoti, a registered representative from Foresters Financial Services Inc., will be addressing the new Social Security guidelines and answering your questions throughout the seminar. Registration is requested.

Healthy habits for a healthier you

Join us at 6 p.m. on April 14, for the second in our series of healthy lifestyles programs. For centuries, we’ve known that the health of the brain and the body are connected. But now, science is able to provide insights into how to optimize our physical and cognitive health as we age.

This program offers participants an opportunity to learn about research in the areas of diet and nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity and social engagement. You will learn tips and tools to help you incorporate these recommendations into a plan for healthy aging. The program will be led by Maura Fleming of the Alzheimer's Association of Northeastern New York. Please register.

Annual meeting

The Friends of the Library will hold their annual evening meeting on March 21, at 7 p.m. They will be honoring FOL volunteers with a reception followed by a short business meeting.

Hallway and display case artists

This month, the library is happy to welcome two local photographers who will be sharing the spotlight as artist of the month. Roger Stump will be displaying his photographs in the main gallery hallway, and Anthony Giminani will be displaying his photographs in the display case. Thanks to both artists for sharing their work with the community. Please be sure to stop in to enjoy these displays, which will run until the end of April.

Friends news

The Friends of the Library have chosen a name for their used book shed  It will be called ENCORE. The Friends are planning to have regular store hours, starting sometime in late spring. Anyone wishing to volunteer with sorting books or working at the store should e-mail .

“Tangled Roots”

The Friends have published their first ever book and it has arrived at the library. “Tangled Roots”, written by the members of the library group Writing Personal History for Family, Friends and Posterity, is a collection of life stories. Led by local author and historian, Dennis Sullivan, the members of the group are thrilled to have their writings in print. Stop by the library to purchase your copy.

Village news

The second annual Village Green Clean Day is Saturday, April 16. Call Karen Finnessey at 765- 2692, or e-mail for information and to register for the roadside clean-up. The Friends will be accepting the donated books from this clean day, and volunteers will be needed. Contact if you would like to help sort donated items.

Chances are that you want to keep some digital photos, e-mail and other files so that you — and your family — can look at them in the future. But preserving digital information is a new concept with which most people have little experience.

On Saturday, March 5, at 10 a.m., you  are invited to the Voorheesville Public Library to learn some tips to help make your personal “born digital” information last. Registration is suggested.

Trustee position available

Nominating petitions are available for the position of trustee for the library board to fill the vacancy caused by the expiration of the term of Bryan Richmond  The election will be held on Tuesday, May 17, and the candidate elected will serve a five-year term, beginning July 1, 2016.  Petitions may be obtained in the library and must be returned by 5 p.m., on Monday, April 18, with a minimum of 25 signatures. Candidates must be  qualified voters of the Voorheesville Central School District.

February is still Nimblefingers Month. We all had a lovely time at the Nimblefingers open house on Feb. 9. Visitors packed into the community room to watch demonstrations, speak with fellow crafters, and enjoy the cozy atmosphere and scrumptious snacks created by this group of lovely ladies.

Sherry Burgoon, President of the Friends of the Library, was on hand to draw the winning ticket for the quilt drawing. The hand-made quilt, generously donated to the Friends of the Library by Nimblefingers, was won by Anna Wolfe. Congratulations Anna! Thanks to all who purchased tickets and helped support the FOL. The Nimblefingers display will be up until the end of February, so if you haven’t seen it yet, you only have a few days left to enjoy.

From mindless to mindful eating

Join us on March 1, at 6 p.m., for the first in a series of healthy lifestyles programs. Most of us often eat mindlessly, or out of stress or boredom when we aren’t really hungry. Surprisingly, people find they enjoy food more and actually eat better when they pay more attention to the experience of eating. This fun, interactive workshop will get you started, and also provide strategies to reduce mindless eating

On Friday, Feb. 19, at 10:30 a.m., the Voorheesville Public Library will be showing a current PG film about your favorite despicable sidekicks, who have existed since the beginning of time. They have evolved from single (yellow) cell organisms into the familiar beings we know, and they live for a collective purpose: to seek out and serve the most despicable master they can find. (91 minutes)

Nimblefingers month

The Nimblefingers ladies have done it again, filling the library with dozens and dozens of original, hand-crafted items. The walls are covered, the display case is bursting at the seams, and the hall gallery is filled to capacity. Stop by and see what your neighbors have crafted. While you’re here, be sure to vote for your favorite design in the table-runner challenge. If you are interested in joining the group, everyone is welcome! They meet every Tuesday at 1 p.m., at the library to discuss textile arts, work on projects, get helpful advice from fellow crafters and enjoy some delicious snacks.  

Clifford’s Happy Birthday! story program

How would you like to visit with Clifford and wish him a happy birthday? Well,you can do just that on Feb. 20. Barbara Lukas from WMHT and Clifford the Big Red Dog will be paying a special visit to the library at 10:15 a.m. Come enjoy some Clifford books, watch a Clifford episode, make a Clifford puppet, sing Clifford happy birthday, eat a piece of birthday cake, and take a photo with our special doggie pal, Clifford!  Children ages preschool through grade two and their families should register online or sign up the next time they are at the library.

Food pantry donations

Donating year-round to the food pantry is a great way to give locally. The volunteers at the New Scotland food pantry will make sure your donation gets to the people who need it the most.  Canned or dry food, paper products and basic personal items are always appreciated. The library is a convenient drop spot for the NS food pantry and, for the month of January, will be giving away a new Snoopy library card for every two cans of food dropped in the pantry baskets, located next to the computer stations.

Get building at 2 p.m.,  on Monday, Feb. 15, with our LEGO bricks and Minecraft blocks. Between bricks and blocks, you can create anything that you can imagine. Students in grades three to seven should register online.

On Friday, Jan. 29, from 6 to 11 p.m., the Voorheesville Public Library has a whole night set aside to do nothing but read.  Bring your bean-bags, camp chairs, or sleeping bags to make yourself at home in the library. Bored? Tired of the same old, same old? Why not stop by the library on Thursday afternoon and watch a classic movie on the big screen? They really don’t make movies like these anymore. We always serve light refreshments and friendly conversation, with a dash of trivia thrown in. To see what movies are playing this month, either check online at voorheesvillelibrary.com or stop by and pick up a brochure. All movies start at 1:30 p.m.

 

Holiday hours

In observance of Martin Luther King Day, the library will close at 5 p.m., on Monday, Jan. 18. The library will reopen at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 19.
