Portraiture and life drawing

On Thursdays Nov. 5 and 12 at 7 p.m. join Joel Braemer as he teaches about the art of figure drawing. Please note only a few emergency materials will be provided so look at the list below for what students need to bring:
 Newsprint pad 12 x 18, preferably larger (typically less than $10); charcoal pencils, variety of soft, medium, hard (typically less than $10); art smock or clothes that are acceptable to get dirty. On Tuesdays, Oct. 19, 26 and Nov. 2, from 6 to 8 p.m., join us at the Middleburgh Library for Taking the Mystery Out of Mystery Writing. Bring your ideas or work in progress to this three-session series focused on the basic elements of mystery writing:  character, plot, and setting.  We'll help you move your ideas to writing with a combination of instruction and discussion. Brief pre-session writing exercises will be available before each session. 

This program is facilitated by Frankie Bailey an author of a mystery series, and a professor at the School of Criminal Justice at the University at Albany and the series is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and sponsored by the Mohawk Valley Library System and participating libraries.  Registration is required.

Ghost lore

On Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. join Cherry Valley town historian, Susan Murray-Miller, as she takes you into the ghost lore with eyewitness accounts from one of the most haunted towns in New York State, Cherry Valley.  The book "Time Between: The Hauntings of Cherry Valley, NY” will be available for purchase at the event.  Registration is required.

Crafts

On Thursday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. come to the library and  Make It! @ the Library: Felt Flowers. Fall is the perfect time to get crafty with some felt flowers. Learn to make three different types of flowers that can be put on pins, barrettes or hair clips. You may even be inspired to make something special for Christmas once you get your creative juices flowing. Please bring sharp scissors if you have them. Registration is required.

Zombie Run

On Saturday, Oct. 24 at 10 a.m. one of this year's biggest fund-raising activities the second annual Zombie Run, is scheduled. This is fun for the whole family. Runners will be enjoying a scenic 5K run along the Long Path with their health belt along with two flags. Zombies will be hiding in and around the course attempting to take runner's flags. All runners need to do is pass the survival line first with at least one health flag.

 There is an entire S'cary County Halloween Festival with vendors, food, and an array of free activities to be enjoyed by runners and families. Over 1,200 people enjoyed this day last year — we welcome you to join the day's festival.

On Friday, July 17, from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. the Middleburgh Library will offer Introduction to Zazen Meditation. Jack King will be leading us in Zazen practice and will continue the two Fridays after on July 24 and 31. The back doors will be opened at 5 p.m.  This will be a trial period to test the water for local interest.  Besides sitting in meditation, Jack will include walking meditation and group discussion. There is no fee; however a $2.50 donation is always appreciated for our local library. Registration is suggested.

Book club

On Monday, July 20, at 2 p.m., join us for Unmask! Graphic Novel Book Club. Get your geek on with fellow comic book fans and we explore new and different super hero graphic novels.  These are not your grandma's super heroes....!  This program is part of our Unmask!  Summer Reading Program and is appropriate for kids going into grade six and up.  Registration is required.

Heroic Hijinks

Tai Chi moves

As of today, Tai Chi program is moving to the Covered Bridge by the Old Stone Fort in Schoharie until Labor Day. 

The schedule for this program is Thursdays from 10 to 11 a.m., for beginners; 11 to noon for intermediate; noon to 1 p.m., for advanced; and 6 to 7 p.m., for all levels.

On Thursday, June 11, at 7 p.m. join us for “Horowitz & Malkine.” Stand-up poet Mikhail Horowitz and unapologetically French guitarist Gilles Malkine have been performing together in the Hudson Valley and beyond since 1989. They perpetrate increasingly unlawful acts of political satire and recycle literary classics, adapting them to rap, blues, bop, hip-hop, high-tech hillbilly, and other, even scruffier musical idioms.

Book discussion

On Tuesday, May 19, at 7 p.m., we will discuss “Marcelo in the Real World” by Francisco X. Stork. Marcelo Sandoval, a 17-year-old with an Asperger's-like condition, has arranged a job caring for ponies at his special school's therapeutic-riding stables. But he is forced to exit his comfort zone when his high-powered father steers Marcelo to work in his law firm's mailroom, in return, Marcelo can decide whether to stay in special Ed, as he prefers, or be mainstreamed for his senior year.

Colonial Beer Fest

On Saturday, May 16, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., join us for the Colonial Beer Fest — 1870 Beer Challenge & Revolutionary War Festival. Activities include a Revolutionary War encampment, colonial brewing and cooking demonstrations, 18th Century toys and games for kids, talks on the history of beer and hops in upstate N.Y. and the Schoharie Valley. There will be Schoharie Valley hops displayed at the library, beer samples from Green Wolf Brewing Co. and MacKinnon Brothers, of Ontario, Canada.

The following is the event schedule:

— 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the hops history display in the library;

— Noon to 1 p.m., the Green Wolf Tap Room is open; and

— 1 to 5 p.m., the Revolutionary war encampment, located behind the library, with the Burning of the Valleys Military Association (US) and the King’s Royal Yorkers living historians (Can.), plus talks on beer and hops.

Admission is $15 for adults 21 years of age and older, includes beer sampling, $10 for non-drinkers or those 20 years or younger.  Children under 10 are free.
