Middleburgh Library Notes for Friday, October 16, 2015

On Tuesdays, Oct. 19, 26 and Nov. 2, from 6 to 8 p.m., join us at the Middleburgh Library for Taking the Mystery Out of Mystery Writing. Bring your ideas or work in progress to this three-session series focused on the basic elements of mystery writing:  character, plot, and setting.  We'll help you move your ideas to writing with a combination of instruction and discussion. Brief pre-session writing exercises will be available before each session. 

This program is facilitated by Frankie Bailey an author of a mystery series, and a professor at the School of Criminal Justice at the University at Albany and the series is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and sponsored by the Mohawk Valley Library System and participating libraries.  Registration is required.

Story time

On Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 10:45 a.m., join us for drop-in story time. Get ready to move in this interactive story time designed especially for children up to age 5 and their caregivers. We’ll read books, sing songs, recite fingerplays, dance, and watch a short movie based on a weekly theme. No registration is required.

Mahjong Mania

On Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 1 p.m. men and women are invited to come learn the game of Mahjong.  No experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn and have fun.  No registration is necessary. 

Insight meditation

On Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 5:15 p.m. join us for a simple group Zazen meditation practice.  All are welcome.  No registration is required.

Book discussion

On Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m., join us for a discussion of "All the Light We Cannot See" by Anthony Doerr.  This is a novel about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II. This book discussion will be facilitated by Mary Cuffe-Perez. This program series is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Sponsored by the Mohawk Valley Library System and participating member libraries. Books are available to check out at the help desk.

Chair Yoga

On Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 9 a.m., join Vicki DeGroff in the Community Room for Chair Yoga. There is a $5 donation for this program.

Discovery Wednesday

On Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 11 a.m.  come to the library for Parachute Play. A fun 45-minute discovery program full of stories, songs, and parachute fun. Appropriate for children ages 2 and older and their caregivers.  Registration is required.

Wednesday matinée

On Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. the library will show "Far From the Madding Crowd," rated PG-13.

Kundalini Yoga

On Wednesdays, Oct. 21 at 5 p.m. join us for Kundalini Yoga.  Kundalini Yoga involves repetitive movements with the breath, building strength, toning the nerves, and clearing the adrenal glands.   Wear comfortable clothing and bring two blankets or a mat and blanket. A $5 donation is requested. Please use the back entrance when entering the building.  No registration required. 

Ghost lore

On Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. join Cherry Valley town historian, Susan Murray-Miller, as she takes you into the ghost lore with eyewitness accounts from one of the most haunted towns in New York State, Cherry Valley.  The book "Time Between: The Hauntings of Cherry Valley, NY” will be available for purchase at the event.  Registration is required. 

Tai Chi

On Thursday, Oct. 22 at 10 a.m. join us for Beginning Tai Chi and then at 11a.m. we offer Advanced Tai Chi. Wear comfortable loose fitting clothing. Registration is suggested.

Knitting Circle

On Thursday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m., the friendly ladies knit and crochet, embroider and quilt, and more. You can learn a new skill here, share your own special talents with others or just craft in the company of friends. Drop in anytime. No registration is required. 

Crafts

On Thursday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. come to the library and  Make It! @ the Library: Felt Flowers. Fall is the perfect time to get crafty with some felt flowers. Learn to make three different types of flowers that can be put on pins, barrettes or hair clips. You may even be inspired to make something special for Christmas once you get your creative juices flowing. Please bring sharp scissors if you have them. Registration is required.

Zombie Run

On Saturday, Oct. 24 at 10 a.m. one of this year's biggest fund-raising activities the second annual Zombie Run, is scheduled. This is fun for the whole family. Runners will be enjoying a scenic 5K run along the Long Path with their health belt along with two flags. Zombies will be hiding in and around the course attempting to take runner's flags. All runners need to do is pass the survival line first with at least one health flag.

 There is an entire S'cary County Halloween Festival with vendors, food, and an array of free activities to be enjoyed by runners and families. Over 1,200 people enjoyed this day last year — we welcome you to join the day's festival.
