Guilderland Library Notes for Wednesday, May 29, 2019
On May 21, voters approved the 2019-20 library budget by 63.5 percent, and the capital construction bond by 58 percent. Catherine Barber, Barbara Fraterrigo, and Barry Nelson all secured five-year terms on our board of trustees.
We appreciate the participation in this election. This library exists for the public, and everyone is welcome here. We want to make it the very best community resource possible — a safe haven of enrichment for all. We’re excited about incorporating the changes you’ve asked for, and grateful for the opportunity to serve you!
Infant and Toddler Nutrition
Transitioning your baby to solids? Wondering what you can give that finicky toddler for lunch? “Infant and Toddler Nutrition: Your Questions Answered!” may provide the guidance you seek. Patty Wukitsch, dietician at the Guilderland Hannaford, will be here Thursday, May 30, 10 to 11 a.m. to answer your questions.
Toys will be available for babies and toddlers during the program. Please register online, by phone, or in person.
Oscar-caliber films
“Vice,” shown on Thursday, May 30 at 6:30 p.m., depicts how Dick Cheney (Christian Bale) quietly wielded immense political power within the Bush administration, becoming the most powerful vice president in American history. Amy Adams and Steve Carell also star. Eight Academy Award Nominations, including Best Picture.
Better Angels Workshop
Would you like to reach common ground with those who sit squarely on the other side of the political fence, without sacrificing your own stance? The Better Angels Red/Blue Workshop Saturday June 1, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., invites equal numbers of people from both sides of the political spectrum to work on understanding other values and positions, highlighting commonalities.
Participants will work toward debunking stereotypes, listening respectfully, and asking and answering clarifying questions, practicing the skills learned. Please register online, by phone, or in person.
Tiny Tots Tummy Time
Starting Monday, June 3, 1 to 1:45 p.m., and every Monday in June, join Pediatric Occupational Therapist Amber Chaves for a stimulating session of tummy time! Explore aspects of parent/caregiver bonding, visual and auditory stimulation through gentle play and song, developmental patterns leading to sitting, variations on tummy time, and baby massage.
Learn about infant developmental milestones, therapeutic movement, and how tummy time now supports school readiness later! This class is for babies 6 weeks to rolling over, with their caregiver. Please register for all sessions online, by phone, or in person.
Self defense for women
Officers from the Guilderland Police Department will conduct the Rape Aggression Defense program for women ages 16 and up, starting Tuesday, June 4 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. The RAD course is 12 hours total, divided into three four-hour sessions (also on June 5 and June 12).
This is not your typical self-defense course; it is designed to teach how to survive attacks. Wear comfortable clothing and footwear, and consider bringing a light snack and water. No experience necessary; seats are limited. Attendance at all three sessions is mandatory. Please register for all sessions online, by phone, or in person.
