Guilderland Library Notes for Wednesday, June 12, 2019

Llamas from Wunsapana Farm will visit the Guilderland Public Library on Friday, June 21, from 4 to 7 p.m, for National Llama Appreciation Day.

It’s close to countdown for our Summer Reading Program at the Guilderland Public Library. We’re plan-eting to launch our quintessentially cosmic extravaganza, “A Universe of Stories,” in just a couple weeks!

Be here on Friday, June 28, for our ice cream party Blast-Off from either 3 to 4 p.m. or 6 to 7 p.m. We’re over the moon about the many exciting offerings for all ages that will send this summer into the stratosphere!

Kids can fill July and August with a whole solar system of fun and educational activities. Tweens and teens can explore several stellar programs, some of which also include adults.

Tai Chi and QiGong

If you’ve been wanting to try Tai Chi & QiGong and reap the benefits, now is the perfect time as we wrap up the current season. No need to pre-register, just wear comfortable clothes and join the movement:  Thursday, June 13 and/or 20 at 11 a.m.

Project Picture Book

Children aged pre-K to Grade 2 are encouraged to attend Project Picture Book:  Splatter Art on Friday, June 14 at 3:30 p.m. We’ll read a story, then create a masterpiece based on the book. Please dress for a mess, and register online, in person or by phone.

Final-exam prep

We’ve got middle and high school students prepping for final exams covered!  Meet in the Normanskill Room with your study buddies from 5 to 8 p.m. on these dates:  Monday, June 17; Tuesday, June 18; Wednesday, June 19; Monday, June 24; and Tuesday, June 25.  

Fitness for Arthritis

Join us Tuesday,  June 18 at 2 p.m. for Fitness for Arthritis a Capital District Physicians’ Health Plan Program. This class incorporates stretching, strength, and range-of-motion exercises geared toward decreasing joint pain and stiffness, while improving flexibility, mobility and overall wellness.

Our instructor is a certified personal trainer and group exercise instructor.  Please register online, by phone, or in person.

Cookbook Club: Asian Cuisine

This month we’ll explore delectable Asian cuisines. Come to the information desk to register in person, peruse the current cookbook, and choose your recipe.

Then on Wednesday,  June 19 at 7 p.m., bring a sample of the dish you’ve prepared for everyone to taste. One lucky participant will go home with a copy of the featured cookbook!  

“If Beale Street Could Talk”

We continue screening Oscar-caliber films with “If Beale Street Could Talk,” on Thursday, June 20, at 6:30 p.m. The film tells the story of a young black couple ripped apart in early 1970s Harlem by the scheme of a racist cop. Tish and her fiancé, Fonny, dream of a future together, but their plans are derailed when Fonny is arrested for a crime he did not commit.

Regina King won the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her performance in this film. The film also stars Kiki Layne and Stephan James.

Board and Foundation meetings

On Thursday.  June 20, The Guilderland Library Foundation meets at 6:30 p.m. and the Guilderland Public Library Board of Trustees meets at 7 p.m.  All are welcome to attend.

Llama extravaganza

Bring the whole family on Friday, June 21, from 4 to 7 p.m. to meet real live llamas (and an alpaca!), courtesy of Wunsapana Farm in Altamont. It’s National Llama Appreciation Day, and we’ll have a llama-themed story time, crafts, and a visit from the one and only Llama Llama in Red Pajamas.

Pet safety and first aid

Veterinarians from the Guilderland Animal Hospital will provide practical tips Saturday, June 22 at 2 p.m. to help keep your furry companions safe and healthy. We'll also be collecting new pet toy donations to benefit the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. This program is only for people; please leave your pets at home.  

Tiny Tots Tummy Time

Every Monday in June from 1 to 1:45 p.m., Pediatric Occupational Therapist Amber Chaves offers tummy time for babies six weeks to rolling over, accompanied by their caregiver.

Bonding, sensory stimulation and baby massage are just a few of the therapeutic benefits covered.  Quality tummy time now supports school readiness later! Please register online, by phone, or in person.
