The New York State Committee on Open Government’s 2024 annual report lays out the various problems with the state’s current transparency laws, and highlights a significant number of legislative proposals that aim to address them.

Guilderland Town Planner Ken Kovalchik told The Enterprise this week that two affordable-housing projects geared toward senior residents had failed to obtain state funding in the past few years, disintegrating one proposal and deeply complicating another.

Berne-Knox-Westerlo chemistry teacher Brian McCoy resigned from the district following an investigation that involved the Albany County Sheriff’s Office.

CLARKSVILLE — A quick-thinking sheriff’s deputy and no small amount of luck saved Sons Deli from a fire that occurred at about 2 a.m. on Jan. 31.

The Berne Town Board will hold its annual reorganizational meeting on March 5, followed by a regular town board meeting on March 12. These are the first meetings the town board will have had since July.

Berne-Knox-Westerlo School Superintendent Bonnie Kane filled the board of education in on various state proposals — from the retention of “hold-harmless” state aid to a possible ban on phones in schools — to lay out the work that will need to be done in the coming months, during the state and district budget cycles.

With little hope for dedicated senior housing in the area, Westerlo leaders hope that by making them easier to build, elderly residents can remain in town by living in accessory-dwelling units, also known as mother-in-law apartments.

To get away from the conflicts and inconveniences that come with sharing a road-salt shed with Albany County, the town of Knox is looking into the possibility of building its own shed on the town highway department property on the county’s strong recommendation.

A combined-action lawsuit filed by former Westerlo Planning Board members who were hoping to reverse the town’s abolishment of the board did not have standing to sue, according to state Supreme Court Associate Justice Susan M.Kushner.

Melanie laCour, who had been one of the Berne Democratic Committee’s recommended appointees to the governor, is an attorney with experience in municipal law, according to a spokesperson for the governor.
