Three town board seats are open in Westerlo, including the supervisor’s, resulting in the most contested Hilltown race this year. Seven candidates are running for the seats, and spoke with The Enterprise this week about their views. 

Rensselaerville had not had a contested town board election since 2017, until this year, when Democrats endorsed sociologist Patricia Byrnes against the Republican Party’s Randall Bates, who has previously served on the town board as well as highway superintendent. Both parties endorsed incumbent Brian Wood. 

ALBANY COUNTY — The first American Rescue Plan Act awards — money from the federal government meant to help with fallout from the pandemic — have been released to the community by Albany County.

The county legislature on Tuesday formally approved spending $1,975,000, according to a release from the county executive’s office.

The Mohawk-Hudson Land Conservancy has received $104,609 to purchase a conservation easement in Esperance, in Montgomery County, that will protect 102 acres of mostly forested land.

The proposal from Guilderland to essentially take over Knox’s Section 8 housing slots — many of which are unfilled — failed to get enough support among the Knox Town Board to even make it to a vote.

Stephen Chesley is running on the Republican and Conservative party lines while Margaret Tabak is running on the Democratic and Working Family party lines.

In a town where there are nearly twice as many voters enrolled as Democrats than as Republicans, the GOP is running two candidates for town board and one for town justice.

Daniel McCoy, a Democrat, is running unopposed for his fourth term as county executive. Within an hour of his presentation, statements from Republican county legislators supporting the budget proposal were released.

Several residents at Altamont’s Oct. 3 public hearing for its proposed chicken law were in favor of allowing chickens in the village, advising the board on specific changes they thought would be beneficial. Mayor Kerry Dineen said that the public hearing would remain open, in part because the board learned that a legal notice was not printed in the paper. 

Heavy flooding this weekend washed out a portion of County Route 353 near the Rensselaerville hamlet, damaging a pipe there and causing the county to close the road for repairs, which are expected to be carried out this week, Albany County spokeswoman Mary Rozak told The Enterprise on Monday.  

ALBANY — Artist Marcus Kwame will teach a “Learning to Draw” workshop at the historic Underground Railroad Education Center where he is a member.

VOORHEESVILLE —Starting on Monday, Oct. 16, South Main Street (Route 201) in the village of Voorheesville will be closed for railroad-crossing construction.

Work is expected to be completed by Dec. 15.

Smokey Bear is coming to the Pine Bush for his annual visit on Saturday in a year when the area has been smothered with smoke from Canadian wildfires. So his signature phrase, “Only you can prevent wildfires,” has urgent meaning.

Nearly nine out of 10 wildfires nationwide are caused by people.

“We want them to be comfortable as athletes — and comfortable in their own skin and not feel objectified,” said Guilderland School Board member Rebecca Butterfield of allowing girls who so desire to practice in sports bras.
