NEW SCOTLAND — Starting on Wednesday, Oct. 25, the part of Albany County’s rail trail near the Bender Melon Farm Preserve bridge in New Scotland will be closed periodically over the next six weeks.

Expenses outpaced revenues in each of the four Hilltowns, resulting in proposed budgets that show modest tax increases. Knox, Westerlo, and Rensselaerville are each expected to stay below the 2-percent tax cap set by the state, while Berne, which had an anomalously low tax rate to begin with, is seeking to go beyond it. 

The not-for-profit group has, according to Thomas Capuano, recently been awarded $50,000 through Albany County’s disbursal of American Rescue Plan Act awards, money from the federal government meant to help with fallout from the pandemic.

The subject had been broached last May by two girls, then in ninth-grade, on the Guilderland High School track team. The athletes, Olivia Mair and Angelica Sofia Parker, each independently wrote a letter to the Enterprise editor and sent the same missives to the school board.

A public hearing is scheduled for Nov. 9, at 7:30 p.m. on a similar local law that would expand the exemption from town property taxes for eligible disabled persons.

Supervisor Russ Pokorny, a Democrat, is facing a challenge from the Republican-backed Jamie Berenger. Meanwhile, Republican-backed board members June Springer and Dennis Cyr are uncontested in their runs for re-election. 

Incumbent Rensselaerville justice Gregory E. Bischoff, a Democrat backed by his own party, is defending his seat from Richard Tollner, who is endorsed by the Republican and Conservative parties.

Incumbent Albert Thiem was first appointed to the Berne Town Board in 2022 to fill a vacancy, while Joseph Martin is making his first run during a stint as planning board chairman. Both are uncontested, as is justice candidate Jeffrey Harvey.

Two police agencies — Bethlehem and Albany — put out releases this week warning residents of ongoing scams.

GUILDERLAND — At about 11 a.m. on Wednesday, the school district here sent a notice to parents about a “non-credible statewide swatting hoax.”

February was the last time the number of new cases was this high in New York state, according to information reported by the state’s health department

Incumbent Westerlo Clerk Karla Weaver is seeking re-election on the Democratic, Republican, and Conservative party lines, as is incumbent highway superintendent Jody Ostrander. Ostrander’s son, Joshua Ostrander, is running for town justice on the same lines. All three are uncontested.

The Rensselaerville Water and Sewer Advisory Committee’s request for proposals is seeking a firm that will evaluate the town’s water system and conduct a preliminary engineering report, which will allow the town to apply for much-needed federal grant money.

Deb Engel, New Scotland’s senior outreach liaison, told the town board at its Oct. 11 meeting that parts for the remaining 2009 vehicle are hard to find. “The exhaust system is completely gone,” she said of the 14-year-old vehicle. “I’m just afraid if it breaks down again, we’ll be without one.”
