A 15-year-old Berne-Knox-Westerlo student was arrested by the Albany County Sheriff’s office and charged with making a terroristic threat, a felony, although the office does not believe the student had access to firearms.

The New York State Legislature voted earlier this month to approve, along party lines, the Democrats’ version of the Independent Redistricting Committee’s plan.

The Berne-Knox-Westerlo Board of Education appointed one of the high school’s English teachers, Bonnie Kane, as the secondary-school principal to replace outgoing principal Mark Pitterson at the end of the current school year.

Spyridon Galis has received $440,000 from the National Science Foundation as part of a collaborative cross-institutional research team led by the University of Rochester’s Institute of Optics, which is focused on processing quantum information as carried by photons, or particles of light.

“This is by no means … our budget,” Altamont Mayor Kerry Dineen said during a recent budget workshop. “This is a very preliminary draft.”

The proclamation event featured an array of honored guests, including State Senator Michelle Hinchey and Albany County legislators Jeff Perlee and Chris Smith.

Some counties in New York State are designated as “high” by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “We will allow them the flexibility to determine what’s best for their county,” said Governor Kathy Hochul in terms of masking in schools. Albany County is “medium,” meaning no masks are required.

The new owner of 112 Maple Ave. is not yet known, but changes to Voorheesville’s zoning code may have to be made to accommodate the buyer of the former Smith’s Tavern. 

Guilderland Superintendent of Schools Marie Wiles noted that the two-year anniversary of the county’s first COVID-19 case — from Farnsworth Middle School — is upon us. It’s been “a rollercoaster for the last two years,” she said and echoed “the power of partnership” in getting through it.

Papers were filed on Feb. 18 by the town’s attorney, James Melita, against Kent Hansen, who owns the property; Joshua White, who leases the property; and The Back Door Albany, the name of the venue.
