In the town of Berne, a heavily contested election has brought forth a variety of issues, as a full slate of both Republican- and Democratic-backed candidates run for office.

GUILDERLAND — Democrat Jean Cataldo, who is running unopposed for a second term as town clerk, says that being at the counter is the best part of her job.

GUILDERLAND — Two years after their first race for Guilderland Town Supervisor ended with Barber edging past him, Republican Brian Forte is running for the same post, this time with Barber as the incumbent.

Forte served on the town board for the three years before his run for supervisor, from 2012 to 2015.

GUILDERLAND — Democrat Peter Barber, a lawyer who chaired the town’s zoning board for years, was elected supervisor two years ago in a tight race against Republican Brian Forte. They were vying for the post held by Democrat Kenneth Runion, who retired after 20 years as supervisor.

GUILDERLAND — Receiver of Taxes Lynne Buchanan, a Democrat, says she loves working for Guilderland and believes in the town. She is running unopposed for re-election to the position she has held for four years.

GUILDERLAND — Democrat Paul Pastore, a lawyer who joined the town board in 2006 after serving for six years as assistant town attorney and counsel to the planning board, is running for re-election.

GUILDERLAND — Enrolled Conservative Kathy Burbank, who led the Guilderland Chamber of Commerce for seven years, is running as a challenger for one of two open seats on the Guilderland Town Board.

GUILDERLAND — Democrat Patricia Slavick, who was first elected to the town board in 2000, is running for a fifth four-year term.

GUILDERLAND — Enrolled Conservative Michele Coons is running for town board in Guilderland, the town where she grew up and hopes to see her two young-adult children stay to eventually raise their families. “Having a passion for the town where you live is definitely a qualification,” she said.

Gerald O'Malley

BERNE — Gerald O’Malley has been serving as Berne’s tax collector for 28 years, and emphasizes his experience as he campaigns for re-election. A Democrat, he is running on the Democratic and Conservative party lines.

BERNE — Mary Alice Molgard has studied and taught communications and communications law for years. She now wants to pursue her interests in the legal system further by becoming a town justice in Berne.

Alan Zuk

BERNE — Alan Zuk is running to keeps his seat as town justice. After serving as judge for two separate four-year terms, as well as town supervisor and in the school district, he said he had established trust in and knowledge of the people of Berne.

A Democrat, he is running on the Democratic and Conservative lines.
