Rafael A. Nieves Sr. of Guilderland, whose son was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2011, addresses the crowd that gathered at Town Hall Wednesday for a ceremony to mark the naming of a section of East Lydius Street where he lives after his son.

A ceremony Thursday will rename part of East Lydius Street after Specialist Rafael A. Nieves Jr. of Guilderland.

The road where Glenn Gilbert lived will be named after him.

The parades through Voorheesville, Berne, and Knox Monday honored the lives of local men who died at war, featuring a large number of surviving veterans to uphold the ceremony.

On Saturday May 14, the Altamont Veteran of Foreign Wars post 7062 celebrated the annual Loyalty Day in Altamont.

Grateful veterans get the lowest exemption, as district administrators worry about re-allocating taxes to other residents. 

Wearing their purple hearts, a group of Iwo Jima veterans met on the 71st anniversary of the famous flag-raising and recalled the 1945 battle over breakfast in Altamont.

The section proposed is between Route 146 and Carman Road, where a mural of Harold Greene was painted on the side of a bowling alley.

The symbolic “watchfire,” or very large ceremonial bonfire, is meant to honor all of those lost in United States military conflicts.
