Since high schools are not required to report to the federal government, the way that colleges are, on the gender breakdown and expenditures of their sports teams, it is up to local school leaders to be sure girls are served equally as well as boys.

Guilderland native Justin Veldhuis, who loves soccer and Spanish, has a job that combines both.

Golf season is right around the corner; the days are getting longer and we can feel it in our bones.

GUILDERLAND — Signs-ups begin on Jan. 17 for Guilderland High School students interested in playing spring sports.

Spring sports start March 6, and include boys’ and girls’ track and field, boys’ and girls’ lacrosse, softball, baseball, boys’ tennis, and unified basketball.

On Sept. 29, the Berne-Knox-Westerlo high school held it's second annual sports hall of fame ceremony. 

BETHLEHEM — Luke Dole of Delmar has been named to the 2016 State University College at New Paltz Men’s Soccer team.

Last season, the Hawks finished 10-8-1 (3-6 SUNYAC) but were on the outside looking in on the postseason. New Paltz finished 7-4-1 at home.

BETHLEHEM —  Joseph Giacone of Delmar is a member of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute football team. Giacone, a senior, has helped the Engineers to a strong start through the first two weeks of the season, including a win at Norwich University the first week.

SLINGERLANDS — Vito Mesiti of Slingerlands is a member of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute soccer team. The electrical engineering major has helped the Engineers to a strong start through the first two weeks of the season with the Engineers posting a 2-1-1 record.

ALTAMONT — Brenna Obrien of Altamont has been named to the 2016 State University of New York College at New Paltz Women's Cross-Country team.

The team is preparing to build on a seventh-place finish at the 2015 SUNYAC Championship meet.

 

KNOX — Knox Youth Soccer will begin on Sept. 11 and alternate Sundays from 3 to 4 p.m. and Tuesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. through Oct. 4 (with a rain date of Oct. 9).
