Altamont Fair

Altamont fair is hosting “The Porter Challenge” to get fit and have fun. It runs from June 1 through June 30 in honor of Porter Bidleman, a 94-year-old World War II veteran who walks the fairgrounds twice a day with his walker.

COVID-19 claims another annual tradition, as the Altamont Fair recently announced it won’t be held this August. 

Organizers of county fairs are worried the extended schedule of the New York State Fair could affect them.

With the late-in-the-week addition of a performance by “American Idol” contestant Madison VanDenburg, Altamont Fair organizers concluded another successful Fair Week in spite of poor weather.  

When he was just 12 or 13 years old, magician Jay Mattioli’s mother had business cards printed for him to hand out at local businesses and schools. He estimates that he has performed magic at over a thousand birthday parties.

Judge Ryan Fedele said that raising rabbits can let kids who live in cities or suburbs have a chance to tend to animals.

Antique farm equipment collected and displayed at the Altamont Fair includes a “bone crusher,” hay rakes, and a refurbished windmill.

The Miss Altamont Fair Pageant kicks off the Altamont Fair on Tuesday morning inside the Village and Carriage Museum with 29 competitors in seven different age groups. The contestants displayed their talents, answered questions, and modeled formal wear for three judges.

ALTAMONT — For Holly VanWie of Clarksville, who is about to be a senior at Bethlehem Central High School, the week of the Altamont Fair is her favorite week of the year. “No one else does agriculture in my school,” she said at the 4-H poultry show on Tuesday, the opening day of the 2019 Altamont Fair.

The tri-county Altamont Fair runs through Aug. 18.
