EAST BERNE — Sylvia Filkins (née Van Aller) of East Berne, a mother and grandmother who loved people, died peacefully on Monday, March 7, 2022. She was 81.

Born in Middleburgh on Jan. 9, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Lee and Ellen Van Aller.

Kenneth’s Army could continue its work against child abuse under a different name as Kenneth’s young sisters have requested since they say use of his name and picture hurts them. They’ve been hurt enough.

Before riders took off, the not-for-profit Kenneth’s Army dedicated a memorial bench at the Berne Town Park to Kenneth White, a 5-year-old who was killed by domestic violence in 2014, and named the park’s access road “Kenneth’s Way” in his honor.

Hundreds of people gathered at the memorial in front of the Knox Town Hall on Monday morning, May 30, as a wreath was laid by Altamont Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7062 Commander Jeff Orsini and Helderberg American Legion Post 977 Commander Richard Bromley.

Eagle Scout Andrew Wright Jr. built a new World War II memorial at Berne Town Park. The original memorial had fallen into disrepair.

Nurse Practitioner Jill Martin’s medical clinic currently operates out of a building on Helderberg Trail, right next to the Berne-Knox-Westerlo school district, which recently purchased the building. The clinic’s new office will also be on Helderberg Trail.
