The cattle killed this month in a tipped tractor trailer are the subject of a campaign to raise awareness about transportation accidents in the meat industry.

WESTERLO — Robert Dietz was bright in humor and wit. He worked his way from the shop to the general manager’s office at Hannay Reels Co.

Robert “Bob” Theodore Dietz died on Saturday, April 12, 2014, in Arizona — at Northwest Medical Center in Tucson — where he spent his winters. He was 86.

BERNE — A longtime highway worker, Joseph LiVecchi was enthusiastic about machinery and the outdoors.

Joseph V. LiVecchi died of cancer at his home early Saturday morning, April 19, 2014.  He was 50.

Broken windows in the long-neglected 1806 Conkling house were replaced with old glass. An etched name on one pane brought back memories of a little girl writing her name with a borrowed diamond; her elderly son told that story.

BERNE — A divided school board adopted an agreement with the Berne-Knox-Westerlo Teachers’ Association on Monday, five years after its last contract expired.

WESTERLO — A fund-raiser for Ruth Peck Savino, who is battling breast cancer, will be held next Saturday, April 26, by the Westerlo Reformed Church and the Auxiliary of the Westerlo Fire Company at Woodman’s Hall on Route 401.

RENSSELAERVILLE — A spring festival in the Medusa hamlet weaves together strands of the community every year to raise funds for the fire company. This year, it will feature talks by prominent local speakers, a business fair, and a “kids’ art lab.”

Berne neighbors of Charles Tommell Jr. helped him after a tractor trailer carrying his cattle tipped over; Tommell said the driver had had an unblemished record.

An out-of-town property owner claims Tim Lippert is obstructing improvements to his Beaver Road property for possible personal interests.
