The Teaching Assistant Unit of the Guilderland Teachers’ Association is sponsoring its Sixth Annual Holiday Toy Drive to benefit needy area children. The month-long drive will run through Dec. 12.

Discussion on stagnant resources and too much space did not deter the school board from deciding to bid in January the work for upgrading all seven of the district's school buildings.

These days, female athletes are taking the spotlight at Guilderland as five signed Division I scholarships. Also, a former Dutch soccer star made an All Rookie team for her efforts in college.

ALTAMONT — Rhona Ballard Twombly, a baker, gardener, and dedicated grandmother, died on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2014, after a brief illness. She was 102.

Mrs. Twombly was born in Georgia, Vermont, on farmland her Ballard antecedents bought from Ira Allen, brother of Revolutionary War patriot Ethan Allen, in the 1780s.

The AARP Guilderland Chapter 980 holds monthly meetings at Christ the King Church at 20 Sumpter Ave. in Guilderland.

The meetings are held the fourth Tuesday of every month. Our next meeting will be Nov. 15.

Our most sincere thanks to the Altamont Veterans of Foreign Wars Post for hosting the memorial and arranging the military honor guard held in honor of our beloved husband, father, uncle, grandfather Edward Paul Cowley. 

Guilderland's successful volleyball season ended in the semifinals last Thursday after four competitive sets with Bethlehem.

With scientists showing the public the emerging applications of their fields, the seventh annual celebration of NANOvember is hosted by the Colleges of Nanoscale Science and Engineering at SUNY Polytechnic Institute. It started with an open house on Nov. 1 and will feature a Family Day on Nov. 22.
