Shooting follows attempted robbery in mall lot
GUILDERLAND — Shots were fired after an attempted robbery in the parking lot at Crossgates Mall last week. No one was injured.
At approximately 5:30 p.m. on Friday, April 24, the Guilderland Police Department received reports that shots had been fired in the upper level J. C. Penney parking lot; the department released these details of the event.
An investigation revealed that four people had been walking toward their car when two men approached them and attempted to rob them.
Three of the four victims got into the car and attempted to flee, and, at that time, several shots were fired by one or both suspects, striking the car several times.
The suspects then got into a car described as a black or dark-colored Lexus, and left the mall in an unknown direction.
The three victims returned to the parking lot to pick up the fourth person who had been left behind and the four then left the mall, heading west on Route 20. They were stopped a short time later and transported to the police department in order to provide information about the incident.
Captain Curtis Cox told The Enterprise this week that it did not appear as though the victims had planned to report the shooting to the police.
“They said they were on their way to get a tire fixed because it had been blown out by one of the shots,” said Cox.
He said an observer had called the department to report the victims’ vehicle because it had been driving erratically, and officers did not know until after the stop that the driver and passengers had been involved in the shooting incident.
None of the victims were injured, according to the release, although the car had several gunshot holes on the right, rear side.
One suspect is described as a heavier-set, black male, wearing a black leather jacket, camouflage pants, and a flat-rimmed baseball cap. The second suspect is described as a black male of medium build, wearing a red jacket.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Guilderland Police Department at 356-1501.
“If anyone was there and saw anything that could help us out, we want them to call,” said Cox.
The investigation is ongoing.
