The Guilderland Senior Services is offering the following activities the week of Jan. 12. Call the senior office at 356-1980, ext. 1048 with any questions or for information.

These local students were named to the dean’s list or received a similar honor from their college or university for the fall 2014 semester:

Alexander Benninger, of Altamont, received academic honors from Arizona State University;

Joseph E. Persico, United States Navy veteran of the Korean War, was honored on Jan. 5, at a ceremony hosted by Albany County. Persico served from 1952 to 1955, and later worked as a speechwriter for Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller and co-authored a book with Colin Powell.

“I knew he drank too much and was going way too fast," said a passenger in a car that flipped on New Year's Eve, according to the police report. " I kept telling him to slow down but he just kept going faster."

GUILDERLAND — A Guilderland native is showing his first independent film project, The CulDeSack Kids, inspired by growing up in suburban New York in the 1990s, to audiences at the Guilderland Public Library.

Time off from school doesn't mean that learning stops. The Pine Bush Discovery Center this week was filled with kids and their elders learning about the wonders of the inland pine barrens.

ALTAMONT — One change Altamont’s mayor, James Gaughan, was happy to see this year arose in response to what he calls the “maleficent looming specter” of the possible closure of Altamont Elementary School.

Facing a much smaller budget gap for 2015-16, most Guilderland School Board members want to beef up the fund balance they have dipped into recently to keep taxes under the state-set cap.
