Raymond Alfred Rafferty
GUILDERLAND — Raymond Alfred Rafferty, a World War II veteran, died peacefully at home on Friday, June 5, 2015. He was 94.
Mr. Rafferty was the son of the late Francis Rafferty and Anna Hammond Rafferty of Albany.
He was a 1938 graduate of St. Joseph’s Academy.
Mr. Rafferty served in the United States Navy in the South Pacific from 1944 to 1946 and earned six Battle Stars.
After returning home, he went to work for the New York State Retirement System, where he met his future wife, Helen Rapp. They were married on Sept. 9, 1950, and their marriage ended only with his death.
Mr. Rafferty left his job with the state’s Retirement System for a job with the United States Postal Service, where he was a letter carrier for 32 years; he retired in 1980.
On Nov. 17, 2014, he was honored at the Veteran’s Day ceremony at the Karner Road Post Office.
Mr. Rafferty is survived by his children, Michael Raymond, Maureen Helen, Brian Francis, and Timothy William; his grandchildren, Patrick Raymond and Catherine Jane; and many nieces and nephews, including Mary Ellen Rafferty, Patricia Glennon, Mary Regina Ackley, Anne Hynes, and Rick, Joseph, John, and Arthur Rafferty.
His siblings — Frank, Paul, John, Vincent, and Joseph — died before him.
A memorial service was held Wednesday at St. Lucy’s/St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Altamont, with arrangements by the Fredendall Funeral Home.
