Guilderland Library Notes for Saturday, August 30, 2014
Guilderland Public Library Director Tim Wiles took the ALS “Ice Bucket Challenge” in front of the library on Friday morning, Aug. 22. As part of the event, Wiles issued the challenge to the directors of the other 28 member libraries of the Upper Hudson Library System located throughout Albany and Rensselaer counties, as well as to the executive directors of UHLS, Tim Burke, and the New York Library Association’s Jeremy Johannesen.

His dunking was part of a week-long charitable campaign during which the library’s staff raised more than $100 to be donated to the St. Peter’s ALS Regional Center in Albany.
According to the St. Peter’s website, “Since 1988, St. Peter’s ALS Regional Center has been providing people with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), sometimes referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, and their families with a comprehensive, specialized blend of services and resources.”

Do you like Guinness?
If you’re a fan of Guinness – Alec, not the beverage – then you should come to GPL today, Thursday, Aug. 28, at 6:30 p.m., to see Sir Alec end up as the scapegoat.
In this 1959 film, Guinness plays two roles, one as a teacher who vacations in France, and the other a French nobleman intent upon avoiding the consequences of some extraordinarily bad decisions. Bette Davis is simply awesome as the nobleman’s mother, who teacher-suddenly-nobleman Guinness must placate.
This movie is a treat, and one not often seen on television. Give yourself a Thursday night out, and come see Sir Alec in one of his most charming roles. His slow burns are classic, and Bette Davis is ever so slightly over the top.
Schedule changes
GPL will be closed from Saturday, Aug. 30 through Monday, Sept. 1, for the Labor Day Weekend. GPL will open at 10 a.m., on Tuesday, Sept. 2.
With the end of August comes the end of summer hours at GPL. From Sept. 2 until June 30, 2015, GPL’s hours are Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
