The company was awarded a bid on Tuesday night that allows it to lay down nearly 40 miles of cable that will provide broadband access to 301 homes in the town of Westerlo; the project is funded with a $1.7 million federal grant. 

Maps shared with The Enterprise, posted online with this story, indicate that the CHPE line, which mostly runs along the railroad track, will cross Youmans Road “via trenching,” will cross Game Farm Road “via horizontal directional drilling,” and will also cross West Yard Road near Route 32.

Board member Nathan Sabourin reported to the others that the policy committee is “going to make some revisions to the dress code in light of some of the requests from students and others regarding sports attire.” Members of the girls’ track team in the spring had said they wanted to be able to wear sports bras.

This week, the Rensselaerville Town Board moved ahead with a law that would — on paper, at least — allow marijuana dispensaries to operate in the town, scheduling a public hearing for Sept. 28. Meanwhile, discussion about another law, which would regulate Airbnbs and other short-term rentals, was paused for lack of urgency.

Supervisor Douglas LaGrange spoke of an unnamed man who died in a townhouse in an unnamed development in New Scotland that does not have a homeowners’ association. The man’s side of the house has been vacant “quite a while,” LaGrange said and it’s “very hard to make sure it’s kept up.”

Ed Mitzen spent much of his childhood in Voorheesville before going on to national renown as the founder of Business for Good, a not-for-profit that practices what he calls “venture philanthropy,” and which is now developing two businesses in the village where Mitzen grew up. 

“As they say, you can’t take things with you, but you can always leave them in a better state than you found them, so this is our way of doing that,” said Bryan Swift, explaining why he and his wife took the risk of buying the land along with neighbors, knowing full well they will not get back all of what they paid for it.

Free naloxone, as well as fentanyl and xylazine test strips, can be ordered through a new ordering portal on the Office of Addiction Services and Supports website. The agency also offers free virtual naloxone training.

“I’m not big on accepting charity,” said Tim Albright. “But we need all the help we can get … There are so many unknowns.”

In a letter to the Westerlo Town Board this week, the town’s planning board chairman, Beau Loendorf, requested that the planning board be allowed oversight of the new firehouse project sought by the local volunteer fire department, which is believed to be immune to local zoning. 

The salon joins 119 other businesses on the New York State Historic Business Preservation Registry.

BETHLEHEM — A Rensselaer man on parole was charged on Sept. 14 with burglarizing two Chinese restaurants in Delmar a month ago.

The Sept. 12 suit includes photographs of Gabriel neighborhood houses in disrepair, overgrown with brush. “The reason for the neglect is now obvious,” the suit argues. “Pyramid ceased maintenance of the neighborhood in order to now argue the area is blighted to support its bid for condemnation.”

Jerry Parmenter, a Voorheesville native who owns and operates the landscaping business Elemental Landscapes, was awarded the Dr. George L. Good Gold Medal of Horticulture for his contributions to landscaping.
