The University of Albany is now more than half-way to the metric of COVID-19 cases that would force classes to be given entirely remotely.

Of the 24 new positive COVID-19 cases reported Sunday morning in Albany County, 16 are connected to the University at Albany. 

New York State announced a record-high number of test results as Albany County reported 28 new cases and its 134th death on Saturday.

Government programs were announced this week to help small-business owners, manufacturers, child-care centers, farmers, and workers who lost wages — all due to the pandemic.

Hudson Valley Wireless gave the town of New Scotland “a very good price and very good deal” on a Wi-Fi contract. 

The spike of COVID-19 cases at UAlbany can be traced back to athletes and to off-campus housing in the Pine Hills neighborhood of Albany, said Albany County Executive Daniel McCoy.

Currently, some places in Guilderland’s five elementary schools, middle school, and high school have “dead spots” for communication, said Superintendent Marie Wiles. The award will be used to upgrade radio communication for all seven buildings.

“The focal issue for the legislature is we don’t want to become the dumping ground for New York State or for the Northeast,” says William Reinhardt, who chairs the county legislature’s Conservation, Sustainability and Green Initiatives Committee and who sponsored the Clean air Act.

Todd Schwendeman announced his resignation from the Berne Planning Board, offering the town board a way to appoint convicted felon Tom Spargo back to the board after his short, illegal tenure. 

The former Clarksville Elementary School in New Scotland is already home to the sheriff’s public safety building; soon it will also house the county’s 9-1-1 call center. 

With no federal bail-out on the horizon Wednesday, local Assembly members and the state’s largest teachers’ union called for New York to raise taxes on the wealthy to help poor school districts hurt by aid cuts in the wake of the pandemic.

Guilderland library trustees voted unanimously to reopen the library — as coronavirus restrictions allow — while construction is underway for an $8 million upgrade. The director will present a reopening plan at the board’s next meeting, on Sept. 17.

The town of Berne is being audited by the New York State Comptroller after Councilman Joel Willsey, the board’s lone Democrat, complained about the formulation of the town’s 2020 budget.

GUILDERLAND — At about midnight on Friday, Sept. 4, two dirt bikes collided, causing serious injuries to both 21-year-old drivers.

On Sunday afternoon, Guilderland Police reported that one of the drivers died: Jonwilliam “Jon” P. Foreman of Loudonville.

Only 55 percent of Hilltown households have self-responded to the 2020 census with less than a month before the United States Census Bureau stops collecting data.
