The Dutch will send seven athletes to Staten Island for state track-and-field competition on March 7. Those seven Guilderland students reached the standard time or distance last Sunday at the University at Albany competition.

The second season for the Berne-Knox-Westerlo girls’ and Voorheesville boys’ basketball teams started with a bang this week in the Section II, Class C bracket. The BKW girls opened on Saturday evening at home against Lake George and never looked back from the opening tip, winning 67 to 17.

The second season for the Berne-Knox-Westerlo girls’ and Voorheesville boys’ basketball teams started with a bang this week for play in the Section II, Class C bracket.

Track athletes from Guilderland, Voorheesville, and Berne-Knox-Westerlo battled in their sectional championships — Division 1 for Guilderland and Division 4 for Voorheesville and BKW — at the University at Albany on Sunday.

Ten Guilderland wrestlers along with one Berne-Knox-Westerlo wrestler who competed on Saturday in Glens Falls will be taking the next step toward the state competition on Feb. 28 to 29 at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association state tournament in Albany.

Alexis Wright became the first sophomore in Berne-Knox-Westerlo history to score 1,000 career points in a recent game against Heatly.

The Dutch will be sending three gymnasts to the state meet in two weeks. Sisters Carli and Allison Rem and Addison Seebode all qualified on Wednesday afternoon at Shaker High School in Latham.

Guilderland finished fourth, with 129 points, in the Class A sectionals Saturday at Bethlehem High School with 10 wrestlers earning a chance to compete at next week’s state qualifiers in Glens Falls.

A last-half comeback by the Voorheesville girls was not enough to make up for their slow start against Watervliet on Tuesday night. The Birds were down by as many as 20 points but, after halftime, they came out firing on all cylinders.

The Guilderland boys traveled to Averill Park High School on Friday evening for a critical Suburban Council game trying to improve their seed in the conference. The Dutch fell behind and tried to mount a comeback in the second half but the Warriors sank their attempt.
