Berne’s new supervisor, Sean Lyons, is new to politics and said he at first felt intimidated running the New Year’s Day meeting, but his confidence grew.

Guilderland’s low-key reorganizational meeting announced the addition of several new members to the town’s committees.

The former Rensselaerville Supervisor Valerie Lounsbury was appointed as an assistant to clerk and bookkeeper Linda McCormick and will work part-time for the town.

The board, while tabling appointments for several positions, named a new planning board chairman who had been rejected in the past two years by the town board.

One regular onlooker at Westerlo town board meetings said he was “thrilled” that the first meeting of the new year, on Tuesday, was “not so bitterly divided” as before, with fluid interaction between the board and audience.

At its reorganizational meeting on Monday, Jan.1, the New Scotland Town Board welcomed new member Daniel Leinung, who takes over for Laura Ten Eyck; named two new members to the planning board; and made a number of appointments.

New Scotland Town Clerk Diane Deschenes said that she has collected over a million dollars towards 2018 taxes, as residents prepaid part of their property tax bill in the hope of avoiding paying more under the new GOP tax law.

The town took in almost $4.6 million in prepayments of property tax during the last four days of 2017. Those who could benefit from prepaying, one expert said, are those who itemize, are not fully subject to alternate minimum tax, and owe more than $10,000 in taxes.

A once-abandoned resort has been approved to host two new solar arrays in Westerlo.
