Steve Oliver, president of the Helderberg Chapter of the American Legion Riders Post 977, on Saturday became one of just 120 people in the country to ever receive the national organization’s highest tribute, the American Legion Rider of Honor award.

As both Democrats and Republicans in Rensselaerville reflect on their difficulties in finding willing candidates, Republicans are still searching for a nominee for town supervisor. Current supervisor Valerie Lounsbury, a Republican, is not running, and a potential Republican candidate turned down the nomination.

Albany County’s Independence and Conservative parties have each endorsed a slate of Berne candidates, including those running against one another. In Knox, the Independence Party endorsed a slate of candidates already endorsed by the town’s Democratic Party, but two Republican-backed candidates are on the ballot, as well.

GUILDERLAND — The incumbent Democratic slate in Guilderland — Peter Barber for supervisor and Patricia Slavick and Paul Pastore for town board — has been endorsed by the town’s largest small parties, the Conservative and Independence parties.

GUILDERLAND — On Friday, Aug. 18, at about 11:47 p.m., Denise C. Johnsen of 60 Pheasant Run in Voorheesville crashed her vehicle in the area of 927 Altamont-Voorheesville Road, said Guilderland Deputy Police Chief Curtis Cox this week. A portion of the road was closed until about 10 a.m. the next day.

GUILDERLAND — Town officials are eager to have William Larned & Sons move Stitt Road as promised years ago. The company has a large mine located near the road.

ALTAMONT — Jean Conklin turned her Tuesday farewell party at Hungerford Market into a customer-appreciation party since she has decided to keep the bagel shop.

Guilderland Police say that Patricia Dudley, 61, of Guilderland was trying to hurt her husband when she drove, with him in the car with her, into a telephone pole on Carman Road. After she hit the pole, she kept going, turning onto several residential streets, where she ran over a stop sign and onto a front lawn, nearly hitting a house, say police.

Guilderland Police arrested Liu Apring and Guiping Zhang on Friday for performing massage without a license at the Chinese Wellness Center, a felony, at 1871 Western Ave. in Guilderland. Three women were arrested in a similar Guilderland case at a different massage parlor on Western Avenue just under a year ago.

The application period to hold pheasant hunts sponsored by the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation has begun.

This program enables experienced hunters and others to obtain state-reared pheasants for use in sponsored hunts for youth, women, novices, veterans, and people with disabilities.

Route 443 in the towns of Bethlehem and New Scotland has been reduced to one alternating lane of travel during daylight hours as the state’s Department of Transportation repaves the road.

BERNE — Berne-Knox-Westerlo’s school meal prices will increase 10 cents for the 2017-18 school year, but school board members with children in the district say that quality has not increased with price.

GUILDERLAND — Tawasentha Park now has Wi-Fi. And soon, videos of all town meetings — town board, planning board, and zoning board of appeals — will be available on the town website.
