ALBANY — Bail was set at $20,000 Friday morning for Justin Hope, the Guilderland man charged with bringing to his apartment and sexually abusing a resident of Vanderheyden Hall in Rensselaer County, where he had worked.

The man accused of sexually abusing a Vanderheyden Hall resident, who had a disability and who was in his care, received a college scholarship awarded to those with “a reputation for honesty, integrity and community service.”

BERNE — There are three seats up for election on the Berne-Knox-Westerlo School Board, and so far, at least three candidates — two incumbents and a former long-time board member — have confirmed that they are running.

An impromptu inspection of a former boarding house has led to the Berne town building inspector to recommend that the town order it either secured or demolished by the owners, a church in Queens that uses the building’s property, but not the building, as a retreat center.

Guilderland school district officials asked students to tell them why so many of them said that safe school buildings were a top priority. Do students not feel safe, officials wanted to know, and, if they don’t, what are they afraid of? They organized a focus group to hear their thoughts, but just one student came.

A fire at the Green Acres Mobile Home Park in Knox has left at least eight homes without power. The trailer park’s owner, who initially could not be reached, has arranged to have it fixed by Friday, he said. Residents in the meantime are using generators, kerosene heaters, or packing up and seeking shelter elsewhere.

In Guilderland, three seats on the school board and two seats on the library board will soon open. Five town residents have picked up informational packets about running for the library board. The election for both boards will be held May 16.

Following a public hearing on a solar bill, and preceding a town workshop meeting, the Westerlo Town Board passed its first law of 2017, which sets requirements for residential and commercial solar arrays.

NEW SCOTLAND — William Z. Childs, 20, of Voorheesville, was arrested on March 19 for second-degree criminal trespass, a misdemeanor, according to a release from the New York State Police.

The Voorheesville Dionysians are producing a “Mary Poppins” musical that is, as director Robert Whiteman put it “entertaining on the surface” but rife with complex relationships to explore beneath.

The Albany County Veterans Services Bureau has sent officials to speak in towns across the county in order to encourage veterans to register with them. Registered as a veteran will make them not only eligible for benefits, but allows the bureau to receive more federal aid based on the number of veterans in their care.

The fire had reached the wooden structure of the building, but not the roof, when it was brought under control.

Sometimes yesterday’s snow is enough to close school down, again.
