“I love to see the kids when their eyes get big as saucers, when they see animals they haven’t seen before,” said Altamont Fair spokeswoman Pat Canaday. “It’s a look of wonderment.” She went on, “We keep getting further away from touching our own food … It’s easy to be divorced from realities.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has derailed New York’s arts and cultural sector, which before 2020 had accounted for nearly half-a-million jobs and generated around $120 billion for the state. A 2020 study conducted by the Brookings Institution estimates that more than 280,000 creative industry jobs and $26.8 billion in sales have been lost in New York, second behind California, which leads the nation in estimated job loss.

The troupe is putting on a rendition of A Christmas Carol that’s staged as a fictional live radio show. The aptly-named play, “A Christmas Carol: A Live Radio Show,” was adapted from the Charles Dickens novella by playwright Joe Landry, with music by Kevin Connors.

The Schoharie Valley Singers are beginning rehearsals for their 42nd concert season entitled, “Brightest & Best — A Virtual Concert.” The concert will be viewable on Friday, Dec. 18, beginning at 7 p.m. on YouTube.

The Hilltowns’ annual Memorial Day Parade, put on by the Helderberg Kiwanis Club, has been canceled over concerns of the coronavirus pandemic. The American Legion in Voorheesville and the Parade Committee in Altamont have also cancelled their parades. 

After Dr. Kevin Knuth’s scheduled lecture at the Carey Institute for Global Good was canceled due to concerns over the coronavirus, The Enterprise spoke with the University of Albany professor and former NASA scientist about his research into unidentified flying objects, or UFOs. “The majority of sightings are misidentifications …,” Knuth said of UFO incidents, “but there’s a lingering 3-percent of cases that don’t have an explanation.”

The Enterprise sat in on a rehearsal for the Berne-Knox-Westerlo Theatre Troupe’s “Flapper!,” which director Penny Shaw-Bartley described as a mad-cap tribute to the Roaring Twenties. Three performances will be held in the high school auditorium over the weekend of March 27.

Author Elizabeth Brundage will be reading from her latest novel “All Things Cease to Appear.”

WRIGHT — The Gallupville House Association has launched a website that went live on Feb. 21.

Speaking for the association, Chris Claus in a release praised the site as “a work of art, volunteerism and community. And that’s the Gallupville House, in a nutshell.”

Bethany Mazura

New Freihofer’s Run for Women ambassador Bethany Mazura said that what she loves about this race is that it is for “all women, all ages, all abilities.” She described herself as a “back-of-the-pack runner” but said, in addition to running the Freihofer’s Run nearly every year, she has also gone on to run in marathons and ultramarathons.
