People all over the world will be celebrating World Orienteering Day in May by trying out fun map activities and games. The Empire Orienteering Club held an event at the Berne-Knox-Westerlo School on May 23.

RENSSELAERVILLE — The Rensselaerville Historical Society will be opening for the season on May 27, holding its annual bake sale Sunday from noon to 3 p.m.

On May 1, the Altamont Train Station Quilters will give a cache of hand-sewn quilts — ranging in size from infant to teen — to the Center for Donation and Transplant New York Chapter for its Comfort Blanket project.

GUILDERLAND — Banners of Hometown Heroes will be unfurled in Guilderland’s Tawasentha Park and at its public library on April 28 while, at the same time, the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall will be on display in the park.

“His friend saved his life,” said Liam’s father, Matt Flaherty. “He had a tumor on his thyroid. They did a needle biopsy, then a surgical biopsy.”  The family got a respite from their worries on Saturday. Two women from the Make-A-Wish Foundation had come to the Flahertys’ Altamont home to talk to Liam and see what his interests are.

The group “In His Presence” will hold a retreat on May 11 through 12 for women who have had a cancer diagnosis and who want to strengthen their Christian faith.

ALTAMONT — On Saturday, May 5, the Altamont Parent-Teacher Association will hold the Albany area’s largest annual community sale. Sales will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and will be found throughout the entire area.

All proceeds will benefit the students of Altamont Elementary School through PTA programs.

HILLTOWNS — Berne-Knox-Westerlo’s Boy Scout Troop 1079 will hold a pancake brunch on Saturday, March 17, at the Masonic Lodge in Berne, next to the Berne Post Office, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The Troop is raising money to help fund a three-day trip to historic Boston over the April spring break.

GUILDERLAND — Community Caregivers announces its first Spring Open House, “Meet Community Caregivers,” on Thursday, March 22, from 4 to 6 p.m.

The open house will take place at the Community Caregivers’ office at 2021 Western Ave, Suite 104, in Guilderland.

The Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission will be offering programs at the Discovery Center during the school break, from Dec. 26 to 30:

— The ninth annual Cookie Burner Stroll is on Tuesday, Dec. 26.  This 2.6-mile hike is for people 8 and older;
