GUILDERLAND — Banners of Hometown Heroes will be unfurled in Guilderland’s Tawasentha Park and at its public library on April 28 while, at the same time, the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall will be on display in the park.

Twenty-eight banners will feature pictures of veterans from all five branches of the United States Armed Forces. Each banner has a veteran’s photograph, name, rank, years served, and branch of service. They will be hung from utility poles and street lamps in the library’s parking lot and at the park.

The name of the person or company sponsoring the banner is also included. This program is ongoing and will continue to add more banners in the future.

Michelle Viola-Straight, president of the Guilderland Chamber of Commerce and the mother of two sons serving in the military, noticed Hometown Heroes banners in cities and towns across the country and wanted to bring them to Guilderland.

The five-day event will start on April 26 with a procession at 7 a.m. led by the American Legion Riders Post 977, escorting the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall along routes 155 and 20, to Tawasentha Park where it will be displayed through April 30.

A public dedication ceremony for the wall will be held at at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday in the park.

The April 28 opening ceremony unveiling the banners will include special guest speakers, military presentations, and performances by the Guilderland Music Academy. Shuttles from parking areas in the park will be available for the opening ceremony.

The State Employees Federal Credit Union is sponsoring the wall display. The banner project, led by the chamber, is supported by the town of Guilderland, its parks department, the Guilderland Public Library, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion Riders.
