Children trailing colorful balloons carted picture books down Helderberg Trail in wagons and wheelbarrows, accompanied by their relatives, to the new home of the Berne Public Library on Oct. 19. They ran, rode, and strolled from the old library at Town Hall to their resting place inside the former St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church across from the school.

The children on Saturday carried their boxes into the library with their parents, then carefully followed a color code to topics, placing the books into wooden bins made by Brett Pulliam.

The new library was opened this week to the public after renovations and decades of searching for a larger library. Since Nov. 16, 1969, it had been housed within the bar area of a former hotel, a shared building with town offices. A grand opening will be held on Nov. 17.
