The state’s Department of Environmental Conservation is, by Aug. 1, returning to plain paper rather than synthetic paper for sporting licenses and carcass tags.

Free Fishing Days in New York will take place on: Feb. 17 to 18 (Presidents’ Day Weekend), June 29 to 30, Sept. 28 (National Hunting and Fishing Day), and Nov. 11 (Veterans Day).

During these days, the fishing license requirement is waived for freshwater fishing on New York’s waters.

To celebrate its centennial this year, the state’s Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is inviting New Yorkers to share their stories, photos, and videos of state parks and historic sites.

Scientists at Albany Medical College are working with scientists at the University of Wisconsin to find a signature, in blood samples, to identify patients who are most vulnerable to long COVID.

Although Albany County has not increased its tax levy in three years, some property owners were surprised to find that their county tax rate showed an increase on this year’s property tax bills. 

“With no checks,” Marshall Lefebvre said, “we could see a loss of all hemlocks.”

Kevin James Craft, who was known for his kindness, died on Monday, Jan. 1, 2024, with family by his side at MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie, New York. He was 49.

Born on Dec. 17, 1974, in Albany, he was the son of the late James Ellsworth Craft and Kay Ann (née McIntosh) Craft.
