Winter storm is brewing

The areas colored blue, like western Albany County, are under a winter storm watch. Brown areas are under a high wind watch, and yellow indicates a hazardous weather outlook.

ALBANY COUNTY — Western Albany County, including the Helderbergs, is under a winter storm watch from Wednesday morning until late Thursday night, according to the National Weather Service.

Heavy snow and mixed precipitation is possible, the service says, with total snow accumulations of 7 inches or greater and ice accumulations of a light glaze possible. Winds could gust as high as 50 miles per hour.

“Travel could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. Gusty winds and heavy snow could bring down tree branches,” the weather service says, noting snow will be wet and accumulations on tree branches and power lines combined with gusty winds could increase the threat for power outages.
