KNOX — Whanda Shedina knew hard work not just as a means of getting by, but for its pleasure and beauty.

An often-large cast at Berne-Knox-Westerlo is performing the musical, about a Chicago teen who stirs up a small town with dancing, this weekend, starting at 7 p.m. on Friday.

“The lighting was perfect, my attitude was great, and the photographer suggested we submit the photos to ‘Playboy,’” said the Hilltown native and Playboy's Miss March.

BERNE — Three students were arrested for allegedly breaking into Berne-Knox-Westerlo’s secondary school early Saturday morning, costing the district several thousand dollars in damage and stolen items, according to the Albany County Sheriff’s Office.

Principal Mary Summermatter reportedly called the discouraged mother of a black student to find out more about the student's experiences with racial slurs and to suggest a schedule change.

Our March 14 meeting was held at the White Church on the Hill, the Berne Reform Church. Sixty-six of us enjoyed a corned beef and cabbage dinner with all the trimmings.

Spring has arrived in the Hilltowns. The red-winged blackbirds are calling, and the sap is running. This Saturday, March 21, marks the fourth annual 5K Sap Run in Knox, coordinated by Helderberg Hilltowns Association. We expect approximately 150 runners of all ages to participate.

On March 10, the Old Men of the Mountain met at the Country Café in Schoharie.

Amyah Trossbach, who has a black father and a white mother, said she commonly hears comments about her race from peers. Administrators have responded to her complaints, but she has had these exchanges throughout her one-and-a-half years at BKW.
