BERNE — Kenneth E. Lee, a Korean war veteran and devoted family man, died on Monday, Dec. 9, 2019, at the Community Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s. He was 89.

On Tuesday, residents of Berne and Knox will be able to vote for a fire commissioner in their respective fire districts. In Berne, Justin Crosier is seeking election, uncontested. In Knox, David Poole is seeking re-election, uncontested.

Garth Slocum spoke with The Enterprise this week about his past experience, his view on revaluation, and whether office hours are necessary for an assessor.

An important need — health care in the rural Helderberg Hilltowns — was filled because it was clearly defined. A brave woman, backed by her family, stepped forward to take a risk because she cared about the people she had treated. A community, led by a modest man with great energy and dedication, rallied others to the cause in an organized and positive way. So now the old doctor’s office in Berne has opened as a new medical practice.

This scribe is beginning to wonder how many times he can write where and when the Old Men of the Mountain meet. It has always been on Tuesday, but where varies, and also comes and goes.

On Dec. 4, Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara will honor East Berne resident M. Claire Ansbro-Ingalls as a woman of distinction for her work with Kenneth’s Army, an organization that fights against child abuse and other societal ills.

RENSSELAERVILLE — The Carey Center for Global good is screening a documentary, “Joshua: Teenager vs Superpower,” about the work of Hong Kong native and youth activist Joshua Wong, who at age 14 led the largest and most successful protest in the period after the 1997 Hong Kong handover.

After its first appointee declined the position because he could not attend the required office hours, Westerlo has appointed Garth Slocum to replace Peter Hotaling as sole assessor.

The Rensselaerville Library’s new director, Heidemarie Carle, describes the opportunity to serve the Hilltowns community with the experience she’s built up over decades with non-profit and government organizations as “providential.”

Michael Vincent with turkey call, podcast

Michael Vincent talks turkey for our Thanksgiving podcast. Here, he sounds a turkey call he made himself. He shares memories of hunting all the way back to his boyhood on his grandparents’ farm on Pleasant Valley Road in Knox. There, he hunted on the land for food which they ate.
