Wrestlers from the Guilderland and Berne-Knox-Westerlo/Voorheesville teams battled in Glens Falls on Saturday for the chance to get into next weekend’s state competition in Albany. To earn an automatic bid, the wrestlers must win their weight class or hope to earn a wildcard birth.

Thomas Hesler

GUILDERLAND — Thomas Hesler, a World War II veteran who worked as a postal clerk and school-bus driver, died peacefully with his family by his side at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2018. He was 92.

The Guilderland gymnastics team — with 10 girls, three of them in middle school — showed grace, flexibility, and smiles to the judges in efforts to win a sectional title on Wednesday at Shaker High School in Latham.

The school district already owns the land on which the Guilderland Public Library stands. Now it also owns two vacant lots next door.

Joseph Vern Kapas and Julia Rose Fremante

Julia Rose Fremante, daughter of Joseph Fremante of Guilderland, and Jeanne Caputo of Albany, is engaged to be married to Joseph Vern Kapas, son of Joseph and Kelly Kapas of Greenwich, New York.

Peter E. Knauss

GUILDERLAND — Peter E. Knauss, a longtime resident of Guilderland, was key in setting up group homes for people with disabilities at a time when that was often unpopular. He died on Monday, Feb. 5, 2018, in Madison, Wisconsin, with his son Jody by his side. He was 88.
