Honoring an Iwo Jima veteran, Senator Neil Breslin visited Sanford Berkman in his New Scotland home to present him with a resolution passed by the State Senate.

In 1925, Helen Keller challenged Lions to become Knights of the Blind. About 20 years ago, Lions clubs from local Districts 20-O, 20-Y2 and 20-W raised more than $1 million to establish a regional resource of excellence for people with sight problems, and the Lions Eye Institute at Albany was established.

GUILDERLAND — The newest entrant to the upscale mall, Stuyvesant Plaza, is West Elm, a branch of Williams-Sonoma that offers contemporary furniture and home accessories.

West Elm will open a 10,500-square-foot store at the beginning of October, according to Janet Kaplan, vice president with Stuyvesant Plaza.

Brittany Nelson

Brittany Nelson has been promoted to be a member service specialist in the call center at First New York Federal Credit Union’s headquarters.

She was previously a teller at the company’s Glenville branch. Nelson graduated Bryant & Stratton College with an associate’s degree in medical administration.

Commercial Banking Account Representative Brenda Janetsky has been promoted to assistant vice president of NBT Bank.

ALBANY — Monica Skanes, an associate with Whiteman Osterman & Hanna LLP, was recently appointed as the secretary of the Labor and Employment Law Section of the New York State Bar Association.  Ms. Skanes also serves as a co-chair of the NYSBA Section’s Communications Committee.

GUILDERLAND — During the weekend of Sept. 22 to 24, the Guilderland High School class of 1967, will be celebrating its 50th reunion.

Activities will include:

— Sept. 22: Evening informal get together at Across the Street Pub;

— Sept. 23: Evening banquet at The Western Turnpike Golf Club; and

5 Rivers, located in Bethlehem and New Scotland, unveiled a brand new visitor center.

Located behind Passonno Paints, off Western Ave, in Guilderland, Barber's Farm stand opened for the season on June 26. Open M-F 12-5:30.
