VOORHEESVILLE — Diana Straut is making her first run for school board because, she said, she has “seen the district from several angles as a parent,” and she wants to bring her experiences as a teacher and a school consultant to the table.



NEW SCOTLAND –– After two years and two failed attempts, the town board is preparing to vote again on a local law limiting the size of large-scale commercial development in the area of routes 85 and 85A, following a public hearing on the issue scheduled for May.

VOORHEESVILLE — Jason Windsor is making his first run for school board, because, he said, “I feel my skills and background would be extremely helpful at this point.”



NEW SCOTLAND –– Starting April 16, motorists traveling along Route 85 have been taking a detour as the state’s Department of Transportation replaces a water drainage culvert beneath the road, near the intersection of Bullock Road.

NEW SCOTLAND –– The fingertips of visitors at the New Scotland Historical Association Museum were able to trace their family lines back to veterans of the Civil War this past Sunday.



GUILDERLAND — Christine Hayes is making her first run for school board because, she said, “I want to give back to the community and be a voice for the students.”



BERNE The Reverend Wendy Cook will be installed at a ceremony this Sunday afternoon, as she answers the call to serve as pastor at the Helderberg Evangelical Lutheran Church.

“I love it here. I just love it here. I’ve been totally embraced by the people here,” Cook said.



VOORHEESVILLE Village residents will see a 3-cent tax increase, if the village board adopts its proposed $1.99 million budget next week.

The tax rate will be $1.18 per $1,000 of assessed value, up from $1.15 per $1,000 this year.



BOSTON — Saturday night, a thousand people filled the seats at the ornate Jordan Hall, which the Boston Globe reported on its opening in 1903 was “a place of entertainment that European musicians who were present that evening say excels in beauty anything of the kind they ever saw.”



GUILDERLAND — Emilio Genzano, who has been on the Guilderland School Board for three years, says he wants to use what he’s learned to help the schools weather the economic storm.



GUILDERLAND — Jennifer Charron, who has two children in Guilderland schools, would like to use her business acumen to reduce the budget without cutting teachers, she said.



WESTERLO — The Hannacroix Rural Cemetery, like many historic country graveyards, is strapped for cash.



VOORHESVILLE –– A Voorheesville handyman accused of stealing items from his clients’ homes did so while illegally collecting welfare funds by not reporting his jobs, reported the Albany County sheriff.



GUILDERLAND — The board of the Guilderland Public Library has adopted at $3.4 million budget proposition that stays under the state-set levy cap, meaning it would pass on May 15 with a simple majority of votes.

The public library has never seen a budget defeat.
