VOORHEESVILLE Village residents will see a 3-cent tax increase, if the village board adopts its proposed $1.99 million budget next week.

The tax rate will be $1.18 per $1,000 of assessed value, up from $1.15 per $1,000 this year.

With a cap of a 2-percent increase on the amount of taxes a village can raise, and the possibility of a county sales tax revenue cap, budget officer and board member David Cardona said that preparing the budget for 2012 and for 2013 is increasingly difficult.

“It’s a great budget, with all the current cuts and restraints this year,” he said. “We’re very lucky. Fortunately, we’re able to keep all the services the same. Hopefully, we can do that next year.”

Roughly $800,000 in county sales-tax revenue is used by the village to balance its books each year, but the revenues have slumped in the past few years.

The total village budget is down from an even $2 million last year, due to the retirement of part-time stormwater coordinator Gerald Gordinier. The village’s remaining employees, including its elected officials, will see 3-percent salary increases under the proposed budget.

“The total salaries are lower,” said Clerk Treasurer Linda Pasquali. This is because of Gordinier’s retirement.

Gordinier also acted as a back-up building inspector, a job similar to the full-time position he held with the village more than a decade ago.

“Glenn [Hebert] is taking over all that,” Pasquali said. Hebert, the village’s code enforcement officer, is also a part-time employee, she said.
