Starting Jan. 1, rules went into effect that significantly expand New York state’s jurisdiction over freshwater wetlands with the aim of protecting a million additional acres of wetland habitats.

This past weekend, Feb. 15 and 17, the Berne-Knox-Westerlo, Guilderland, and Voorheesville indoor track teams competed in their Section 2 divisional championships at Hudson Valley Community College to compete for a spot in Saturday’s state qualifiers.

From Thursday to Saturday, Feb. 13 to 15, the Guilderland-Voorheesville swim team competed against the other top Division 1 schools in the Section 2 championships at Shenendehowa High School. Isak Brkanovic qualified for multiple events at states on March 7.

Last Wednesday, Feb. 12, the Guilderland gymnastics team took part in the Section 2 championships at Shaker High School. The Dutch performed well in all four events as they finished fourth with 156.150 points, and Simona Scavio qualified for states on the floor exercise.

Last Wednesday, Feb. 12, the Guilderland Nordic ski team took part in the Section 2 championships at the Gore Mountain Nordic Center against 10 other teams. The Dutch shredded the snow away as Guilderland’s Nathaniel Burke and Landon Kinal qualified for the boys.

The project is being developed by Pyramid Management Group, owners of the project-adjacent Crossgates Mall.

“We are going to have to rein in our overall expenses to address these spending challenges in light of net-zero state aid and less then a $2 million tax cap compared with our health-insurance increases,” Andrew Van Alstyne, assistant superintendent for business, told the board.

GUILDERLAND — An elderly Guilderland resident who was about to be scammed alerted police who, by working undercover, ended up charging two New Jersey men for attempted grand larceny, a felony.

A release from the Guilderland Police said events unfolded this way:

Superintendent Marie Wiles told the school board on Feb. 11, “This is the first project that will need to take place over many years to transform our facilities into the future-ready environments that they need to be. So this is the start of the conversation, not a one and done.”

GUILDERLAND — A Guilderland school bus was rear-ended by an F-550 work truck on Thursday morning on the Berne-Altamont Road.

There were about 10 middle school students on the bus when the bus driver stopped to pick up a student, according to Guilderland Superintendent Marie Wiles.
