The lawsuit, filed April 24 in Albany County Supreme Court by Dustin and Catherine Abbott, accuses the village of negligence in the design, installation, review, and maintenance of its stormwater drainage system.

Certainly the town government can and is doing some things that will attract families to the district like maintaining an excellent park system with recreational programs, and requiring developers to include low-income and workforce housing in their projects. Guilderland also, as we’ve written before on this page, needs to undertake another town-wide property revaluation to set the school district on a more secure financial foundation.

At the corner of routes 146 and 158, John Phillips is looking to add a mini-golf course along with an ice-cream and pizza shop on an eight-acre parcel behind his hardware store. 

On Friday, April 24, the Guilderland unified basketball team hosted Bethlehem at home. Both teams played in front of all of Guilderland students as they supported both schools and cheered loudly every time someone scored. The Dutch rallied in the second half to win 32-25.

On April 21, the board agreed to set public hearings for four proposed local laws: a battery energy storage system moratorium, the codification of the Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission’s involvement in future development decisions, amendments to town rules for building in environmentally sensitive areas, and  Accessory Dwelling Unit zoning.

GUILDERLAND — Kelly Sloan, who leads St. Madeleine Sophie School in Guilderland, has been named Principal of the Year by the Capital Area School Development Association.

​​Developer Markstone Group made the claim to members of the Guilderland Planning Board late last month that 30 of its proposed project site’s 51 acres constitute buildable land, entitling the developer to place 210 apartment units on 11 acres of the site. The planning board disagreed, arguing only 10 acres were viable for construction, drastically cutting the potential number of units Markstone could construct from 210 to 120. 

Birth rates are declining nationwide and immigration is slowing. More than half of New York’s counties, Scardamalia said, are in a state of natural decline with more deaths than births.

GUILDERLAND — The Book House of Stuyvesant Plaza will celebrate its new location and 50th anniversary on Independent Book Store Day, Saturday, April 25.

The shop has returned to the place in the plaza where it opened in 1975 between two new venues, Sur La Table and Athleta.
