VOORHEESVILLE — Shortly after 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, a small crowd heard the news that every proposition up for vote had passed.

The group, mostly made up of school board members, clapped and nodded as each proposal was read along with the voting numbers.

Two incumbents, Chasity McGivern and Vasilios Lefkaditis, and a newcomer, Russell Chauvot, are running for the Berne-Knox-Westerlo school Board. The results could significantly change the way close votes fall.

KNOX — Among the goals for Vasilios Lefkaditis in his second term on the Berne-Knox-Westerlo School Board is the creation of a central repository for the school’s documents.

BERNE — An Army veteran and now a computer trainer, Russell Chauvot said he loves teaching and wants to work on the evaluation system for Berne-Knox-Westerlo instructors if he is elected to the school board.

KNOX — One year after she was elected to the Berne-Knox-Westerlo School Board, Chasity McGivern is running for a full three-year term.

The BKW alumna filled the term left unfinished when board member Maureen Sikule resigned.

Eligible residents will be able to have their assessed property values reduced by a maximum of $12,000 for wartime service, and larger amounts for those with combat service and disabilities.

A survey on the 2014-15 budget should be submitted by March 5 for the budget advisory committee to review. It will remain open online until March 10, when school board members meet next to discuss the budget.

The school board has not yet convened a committee that traditionally combs through the spending plan starting in November. In recent meetings, the board and superintendent have discussed a modified timeline for the budget.

Board members shouldn't hide behind a law; they should make clear and known what is appropriate for them to speak about publicly.

Interim Superintendent Lonnie Palmer thinks the school can save on per-pupil spending and be in the 70th percentile among other schools in the area.
