In the last week, veterans were acknowledged and fallen soldiers were remembered in separate ceremonies in Altamont, for Loyalty Day and the Memorial Day parade.

After a brightly colored parade, residents gathered to hear solemn speeches in the hamlet of Knox on Memorial Day. “We’re here to honor the dead,” Don Champion, an Army veteran and member of the Knox Volunteer Fire Company, said in his introductory remarks during the ceremony.  

The Memorial Day parade through the hamlet of Berne was a loud and vibrant gathering in the street, but quickly turned to the quiet respect of hanging heads and flag raising.

Villagers watched a procession stride through Main Street on Sunday, May 18. The village held its Memorial Day ceremony at the war memorial in Orsini Park.
