Candy flew through the air, as did red-white-and-blue streamers and flags, brandished by a cheerleader for reading on the Berne Library’s float. After the fanfare of floats took its last turn, scores of people lining Helderberg Trail in the hamlet of Berne encircled a podium, large American flags, and a wreath laid at the memorial by veteran Marty Herzog and State Police Trooper Cait-E Kiani.

Local heros: Well represented were the fire companies, like the ax-bearing Art Shultes, a member of the Berne Volunteer Fire Company.

A patriotic pup steps to the memorial ceremony in front of Berne-Knox-Westerlo’s elementary school on May 26, left.

As taps was played and a group of Boy Scouts raised the American flag, a smaller Scout saluted next to the Berne-Knox-Westerlo band.
