These local Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical Education students earned the right to compete April 22 to 24 at SkillsUSA championships in Syracuse after placing among the top finishers in each of their events during a regional competition conducted in Schenectady last month:

Students were out and about, signing at the Empire State Plaza as a form of light lobbying in Albany on Monday, and constructing a refuge in Schenectady as part of a BOCES Career and Technical Education program.

"I am creative and I like building stuff," said Chris Brumley, a student at Voorheesville who is pursuing a career in engineering.

Richard Bader, a lawyer, keeps his New Visions students thinking on their feet, which led to the team being the first of upstate students to win a state competition on the Constitution.

One of only two parents to come to a forum on what to look for in a new Berne-Knox-Westerlo superintendent said he was "desperate for consistency" as the district has high turnover in leadership roles.

With $120,000 repairs needed to a library, and two more resignations by high-level administrators, the Berne-Knox-Westerlo School Board, and its new superintendent, Lonnie Palmer, are making big decisions about the district's future.

BERNE — At the end of its July 15 meeting, the school board used colorful markers and shiny stickers to determine its priorities and goals for the year: settle contracts, improve academic scores, differentiate instruction, reduce bullying, create budget timelines, and promote positive news.
