After a kitchen fire last month, the family's home on Bradt Hollow Road is uninhabitable as they stay in a family member's house. 

Conservation easements on the property will limit the town's primary use to a few dozen acres among nearly 360. Town officials hope the land will be a source of jobs for residents and revenue to the town.

Reviving the historic property — used as a community park, a summer hotel, and a christian retreat in Berne — along Route 443 has been complicated by an expensive demolition.

In order to get toilet water from the Berne hamlet into the Fox Creek below, it has to be cleaned through the sewer district’s treatment facility, which recently started flowing wastewater through its tanks and coarse sand filter.

Kristin Mack, who found Berne in her search for a rural practice to begin her career as a doctor of osteopathy, said her native community in West Virginia has many similarities with the rural Hilltowns.

Highway superintendents and their town boards across the state have to agree to what road projects will be done every year. Berne Supervisor Kevin Crosier says the highway superintendent's late list is too costly and can't be approved.

Jeff Alexander has held several positions within Berne's town government, among them overseeing the transfer station under the highway department, driving the senior bus, and maintaining the parks.
