Berne

Elected leaders celebrated the purchase of more than 350 acres of land, to become a major addition to Berne's parks department, after the closing on Jan. 30.

Berne can look forward to having a roof over its salt and sand, Supervisor Kevin Crosier said during the town’s reorganizational meeting on Jan. 1 as he described projects for Berne in 2015.

BERNE — In 2014, the town was shaped in several ways by the hand of government, which was itself shaped in a close election for highway superintendent.

KNOX — While 5-year-old Kenneth White’s aunt and legal guardian was away for 30 minutes to visit his school Thursday afternoon, he was strangled in his home, police say.

Marcia Pangburn, who was arrested for resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration last summer, said she felt the hearing, where her attorney asked questions for most of the three hours, did not go well for her.

Albany County's emergency medical services coordinator, Brian Wood, said the third town that needed to bear the cost, Westerlo, of the program didn't agree to spend the money.

EAST BERNE — Stephen Alan Furman had a sense of humor and purpose.

His children were “the light of his life,” his family wrote in a tribute.

BERNE — Ellen D. Yarmchuk, formerly of Berne, died on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2014, at her home, in Rogersville, Tennessee. She was 92.

Mrs. Yarmchuk was born on Nov. 21, 1921, in Troy, to the late William and Julia (née Satterlee) Dobbs.

BERNE — Always cooking and gardening, Sarah Deitz was an active woman who was comfortable making pies and logging wood.

Mrs. Deitz died on Monday, Nov. 17, 2014 at Tranquility Hospice in Marietta, Georgia. She was 93.

For several years, local residents, private supporters, and school officials have been interested in siting an observatory for community and student education. With Berne's purchase of hilltop land for recreation, the idea is again being considered.
