Paving underway on Route 85

The state’s Department of Transportation is repairing pavement this month on Route 85 and Route 9W in Albany County.

Work on Route 85 began on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the Berne-Westerlo town line and runs seven miles east to the intersection of Route 85 and Route 157 in the town of New Scotland.

Work is scheduled to begin on Route 9W at the Albany County-Greene County line in Ravena on Sept. 18. The project will proceed north on Route 9W for roughly 3.6 miles, through the village of Ravena to the intersection of Miller Road in the town of Coeymans.

During the work on both roads, motorists will encounter temporary and moving single-lane closures controlled by staffers with signal flags at various points.

Both Route 85 and Route 9W will be two-phase projects. During the first phase, the DOT will mill and recycle the pavement along these stretches upon which motorists will temporarily drive. Workers will return within a month to install the final top course layer of asphalt pavement.

The work on both highways depends on fair weather.

The DOT reminds drivers that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of a driver’s license.
