Altamont pantry has increased use, decreased donations

To the Editor:

I was recently listening to a radio fund drive for the Capital District Food Pantry, and they suggested we also contact our local food pantries to see how they are doing, which I did.

The Altamont Community Food Pantry is run by longtime director, Altamont resident, Judy Seery. I contacted Judy for an update and she reported the following:

— The Altamont Pantry has seen a big increase in families using the pantry, from an average of 20 families to now an average of 30 families;

— Monetary and food donations are down; and

— Food, toiletry, and household items are much more expensive, both from the Regional Food Bank or local stores.

So what can the community do to help?

— Make a monetary donation to the Altamont Community Food Pantry, Post Office Box 678, Altamont NY 12009;

— Deliver nonperishable, unexpired food, toiletries, and pet products, high priorities being tuna, pasta, soup, baked beans, and paper towels, liquid hand soap, deodorant, toothpaste, and disposable razors. Deliver to the pantry at 122 Grand Street (St. Lucy’s Parish Building) the first and third Monday of each month from noon to 5 p.m. or call 518-861-6542; or

— Attend the Altamont Scouts Troop 264 food drive at the Altamont Pantry, 122 Grand Street on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

I know many of us support the food pantries in the area, but I thought shedding a little light on our Altamont Pantry’s needs might be helpful.
